I really want to start doing deadlifts, but at 48, I always worry I'll end up trying too hard and end up damaging my back..
It's more about practice and form than age. I'm a little older than you and while nowhere near Pilchard's league I'm still able to deadlift +120kgs - that's from a standing start when I was about your age. Still hoping to get to 2x bodyweight - slow and careful progress. It's not a race.
Use steady progression starting off with as light a weight as you can and increase by 5kg or even 2.5kg each session. that 40-60kg starting weight soon gets to 80kgs, 100kgs & 120kgs. Just don't try to run before you can walk.

Cheers smile

I think I will start them in the new year once a week, to start with (having a week off after next week - have been doing it solid since may)

What the Lord Grover said ^^ yes

Further, it's always a good idea to leave your ego at the door in the gym. This is doubly so with squats and deadlifts, especially if you're new to them.

Further, don't start off with alternate grip - start and continue with overhand grip.

I train by myself, in my garage, so the only person I have to prove things to is myself.. smile

I know plenty of people still dead-lifting in their 50s and 60s

If you do it right, it's about the best thing there is to avoid back problems - good strong erector spinae and supporting muscles around the spine

(I'm 40 myself btw)

My slight moan, well, ok it's a minor irritation, is that I hear comments from massive guys taking the piss out of non-standard exercises I do that are sports-specific and have improved my on-court ability/technique etc. Just because you are too heavy and sore to do anything useful doesn't mean we all have to aspire to not be agile.

And before you ask how I know they're not agile like a ballerina, they can barely walk properly. biggrin

I trained bench on Monday with a guy a few years older than you and he's stronger than 99% of gym goers. He squats and deadlifts heavy too.

*shudder* I want my chalk black. If it's not pure black, I'll know you've left a deposit and it'll go straight in the bin. tongue out

Tons of parking at my gym. I cycle in so places to lock my bike up will never be an issue.

What will be an issue though is morons hogging power racks to do curls or something. There's only 5 power racks, used to be double but they restructored the gym, moving the weights section into a smaller room and replacing the larger old room with some kind of functional movement machines.

And so it begins.....

...listen love, I don't mind that you're resting between sets but not getting off the machine, I don't mind that you're talking to your mate on the machine opposite, but do not, DO NOT take a rest of three fking minutes plus between sets when you're pulling less than 30kg on the lat pulldown machine and then act all surprised when I ask how much longer you're going to be!

Look at it this way, she's subsidising your 12 month subscription. She'll be gone in February but forget to cancel.

My gym is now BUSY, they can't have all signed up en masse so i suspect these are people who already have a membership and decided to use it.

free weights/benches being hogged, stuff in a mess, etc frown

Maybe you're right which really does lend weight to my idea that they're subsidising your membership.

Went to my proper gym this morning. Couldn't see any noobs - or at least nobody who looked like they'd never been in a gym before. There were faces I didn't recognise but it's still a holiday for many.

Nipped down the gym on New Years eve, it was fking heaving mad
I didn't realise it was national "do your biceps and nothing else" day (with st form and 2 inch ROM)
Also, if you're doing seated OHP (in the squat rack) with 10Kg on the bar; are straps really necessary?
