back in my old gym I was using the smith machine to squat in. With me mid-set this old husband and wife couple walks by talking to everyone then goes to me 'ohh that's alot of weight, better not drop it *laughs*'. properly pissed me off.

What, you're literally in the process of lifting weights and someone asks you, mid-lift, for a spot?

That's a new one!

Bloody hell, that's unbelievable.

Never seen that before. Wouldn't surprise me if the person asking is on the autistic / Asperger spectrum.

Usually if someone asks for a "spot" what they actually mean is "I can't actually manage to do this weight so I need you to help". How about drop your weight and do the fking exercise properly?!

No. I'm using the fives. Take what the fk you want, but leave the 5s.

So how do yo propose to break a plateau or go for a potential pb or up the weight?

I bet you hoard the 5kg plates dont you and add another 5 instead of using a 10/15/20/25

Its not exactly difficult to tell when an exercise is too hard.

I'm not a bodybuilder either so PBs mean nothing to me. I increase weight each week, thats good enough for me.

I am also probably the most considerate person in the gym. I don't hoard anything because I am not a . Simple. smile

If by "spotting" you mean going for a PB and having someone on standby in case you need to bail. Fine.

But you don't *need* to though.

Or the other definition - having someone assist you in lifting the weight - something I've never really seen the point in.

So, to answer your question of how to increase the weight, I'd suggest going up the rep range of the current weight, which will have carryover to a weight increase.

I've always made progress, increased weights, broken PB's and plateaus - without using a spotter.

Some of the strongest guys on here and those who have made brilliant progress, train alone.

Spotters? Massively overrated, IMO.

Stronger in the eccentric, and so can help strength plateaus?

I have spotted for my step-son, at the end of a set when he would have otherwise put the bar back on the rack, I eek out a couple more reps for him with a little help.

This. It pisses me off.

If you're trying to force out a set of 10 negatives that are 25kg heavier than you can normally bench, then you shouldn't be asking a stranger to help you with that. If you do at least have the decency to explain what's going on.

To me a spot is being on hand just in case, maybe helping them squeeze out the last rep or two with a little assistance.

Exactly. The people I see being spotted clearly aren't going for PBs, usually student types with oversized egos who otherwise do lots of bicep curls and standing around chatting...
