I do. usually spend the first half a minute on my breathing, then i check my phone which takes less than a minute, or much less, or i wont check it. then the remainder I'll wait and thing about my next lift.

No, you don't, do you. I can tell by your phone addiction and general tone that it's more along the lines of:

Finish set bicep curls.
Throw a few punches at the mirror - 15 seconds.
Lift shirt, check six pack in mirror - 15 seconds.
Check phone - 1.5 minutes.
Look around gym to see if any hot girls are about. Immediately look away sheepishly if one looks your way.
Check phone - 1.5 minutes.
Chat bro st to mate - 1 minute.
Check phone, update Faceplant status - 2 minutes.
Chek abs in mirror - 15 seconds.
Set 2 bicep curls.

Move onto cable bicep curls, repeat.

All of the above are annoying but I often have my phone out. I log my workouts on it so to many probably looks like I am doing sod all but I'm just checking out my routine.

What annoys me at the moment is people who walk around completely nude in the changing room.
Put a towel on for god's sake.

You guys are spending 60-120 seconds thinking about your next lift? Bloody hell. Is every trip to the gym a powerlifting meet? The guys I see psyching themselves up for ages then usually proceed to do half reps at a weight they cannot control. Ego lifting classic.

you sound like someone who wears tapered tracksuit bottoms

my soon to be former gym now has a policy where the trainers are fined £5 if they use their phone for anything other filming their clients as it got to a stage where, i believe, theyd spend more time on the phones than encouraging or paying attention to the client

I spend the entire rest between sets thinking about the next lifts. Always have, and everyone I know who's serious about achieving goals in the gym whether it's strength, endurance or power does the same. Everyone has a bit of banter but do you realise how distracting mobile phone use is, and how important concentration and focus is to your own sports performance? Quite apart from taking unnecessarily longs breaks, holding others up etc you look another self-important newbie who hasn't a clue and your chances with the lady your showing off your incredible bicep curls to plummet.

I veer between using my phone a lot and not at all (music excepted), but it's always dependent/secondary to the time breaks. It's always on for music. When I'm executing a routine that has large breaks, I'll check it, but during circuits I barely have time to press a few buttons...but I still use it for the timer! Gymboss is a good app too.

Music's the exception, for many, and it doesn't distract the mind in the same way as texting or chatting. Spending time searching for it isn't good though. My old gym used to play Prodigy, Green Day and a fair amount of grunge etc. Had some great music-driven sessions, but the music then was over the loudspeaker system, not earphones. Not sure how much difference, if any, that makes though.

In hindsight I'm very surprised that since my Puregym has been open, I can only recall a couple of occasions when I've noticed a phone being used for a call, given the youngish average age of the punters. Noticeably obvious that's it's the girls who are far more likely to be on WhatsTwitInstaFace whilst using machines etc.

Young people don't use phones for calling people.

Yeah I guess that's true. smile

Speaking in joined-up sentences is very confusing for many of them at the best of times.

Personally I cover up, but 20 years ago I didn't. Society has become more prudish it appears.

For all the 'laddish' behaviour/language that goes on I have to agree.

I don't walk around naked but also don't do the whole dressing/undressing under the towel like Mr Bean. 30ish years of playing Sunday league football (+ my age) means I'm comfortable in my body & my sexuality to NOT be bothered about not having a towel around me to put my boxers on.

Have to agree. I might take a swig from my bottle but otherwise a few deep breathes of recovery & oxygen back into the muscles ready for the next set.

I know its modern society but unless you're using your phone for music or track your workout why do you need it in the gym? If you're waiting for such an important call (of course you're not) why are you even in the gym. Oh you might miss that Facebook update from your Mum to say your tea's ready? You're right, that IS important & you must take up a piece of equipment that someone else could actually be using for what it's there for rather than just somewhere to sit.

I only use a towel out of courtesy; I don't want to cause other blokes pangs of inadequacy.

Unless yours drops down to your knees and starts flopping aboout like a vaccum cleaner hose then no guy looks in that area let alone long enough to compare sizes. guys dont even make eye contact so why would they want to look there?

Interesting, I am a Mr Bean, I do this as when I leave the showers I have it around my waist and see no reason to be walking around naked, the 1st thing I do is put some boxers on.

Seems that people are either like me or the other extreme hair drying their privates as far as the hairdryer cord will allow them to go! One foot on a bench facing into the changing rooms was how one idiot chose to do it this morning!!!

As far as I can see most people don't use the changing rooms so they don't have anywhere to put their valuable belongings. They just turn up in a tracksuit and then go home like sweaty hobos smile

Who said anything about using a mobile phone?

I do a superset, or have a little stroll or do some stretching. But I certainly don't spend more than a few seconds thinking about the next lift. I'm lifting well below my 1RM and performing lifts I have done hundreds if not thousands of times before. If I needed a whole minute to prepare myself to do that, I would worry about myself.

I prefer to save my mental energy for the lifting!
