I like my works gym, it's normally quiet (I think I've only seen one other person in there when I'm there and they were arriving as I left. )
No mobile phones allowed anywhere near the site, so there wouldn't be any phone fiddlers even if it wasn't deserted.
Decent range of weights.
A range of CV and cable machines etc. to rival most commercial gym.
And it's free. smile

I really don't have any gripes other than it being inconvenient to get in to use it especially if I'm not working. I'll be working away for a few months mon-fri but I'll be joining the local independent gym when I get back just for days off.

gym today. I'm at a power rack and an empty one next to me gets taken by 2 people who were using the bench press isolation machine to do bench presses. They then proceed to collect up 4 pairs of 10kg plates to use for themselves instead of just using 1 pair and the 20kg plates that were already next to them!

You can get achievable but strong figures for a normal sized guy:

60kg for reps on OHP and rows.

100kg for reps on the bench & front squat.

The jumps are pretty big, though, so you probably need the smaller weights too. I don't fancy trying to jump from 60kg to 100kh on power cleans, for example. And 100kg to 140kg on the bench is probably not possible.
Completely a personal thing lol, I'm in no doubt its useful for what you've mentioned, its just me!
My gym just got a set of bumper plates (all the same size down to 5kg). There are nowhere near enough yet, but they are nice to use and it makes it easier to change the load quickly.

The downside is getting used to them. I put on forty kg to warm up with clean and press and almost threw the bar, because instinct made it look like 60kg.

My gym has the same (Pure Gym) but no one listens at all.
May try and contact the Gym manager as it really annoys me but not sure what can be done to prevent it as they already have big signs saying please return the weights correctly.

I am sure it annoys the manager more than you!!

I go to a DW and the staff there are pretty good at keeping on top of it, the manager says its a health and safety issue so must be sorted out!

I used to put them back at random locations to annoy the s that left any dumb bells on the floor infront of the rack. Sadly it wasnt always punters leaving db's unracked but PT's with clients doing the same

The usual place to find weights in my gym is on the floor. It does breed laziness. I don't always unload a barbell anymore because I've come to think 'Why should I waste my workout time when everyone else just leaves weights on the floor? They can unload it when they want to do curls'

^ Sorry you two, but that marks you out as a pair of knobbers imo !!

How hard is it to return dumbells to their correct place (or close to) and spend a minute to unload a barbell?!

After I've wasted 5 or more minutes finding weights all over the room, I'm am not going to cut short my workout removing weights from barbells. It is nobbish not to unload the bar. I agree. But that's the attitude I have now after literally years of tidying up after everyone else in the gym. I've finally given up and become selfish.

I shall try to go back to being the one non-dhead in the gym. No excuse for dropping my standards.

One from last night: people who do not know how to spot and mess with your sets.

I was doing 8 x 3 on the bench press with an easy weight for me. All I needed was a hand off the rack. No spot. No help re-racking.

Each time I asked someone to spot, I said 'I just need a hand off, please. I don't want you to touch the bar after that. I'll shout if I am in trouble'. Despite that, 3 separate individuals grabbed the bar to help me through the sticking point, thereby ruining the set. I ended up doing 11 x 3 to make up for the ruined sets.

I know they were only trying to help, but I gave clear instructions! I think part of it is that a paused bench press is a rare thing. It really irritated me because I didn't have the time to do 3 extra sets so ended up having to skimp on assistance work.

A beautiful moment occurred yesterday morning at the gym. I'm minding my own business when I hear one of the regular guys behind me shout across to someone else.

"Put the weights back when you're finished."
"What?"
"That weight you've just left on the floor. Put it back on the rack."
"Are you fking watching me?"
"Yes. Put it fking back."
"Is it mine?"
"Well you were just using it and left it on the floor."
"I don't think it's mine."
"I literally just watched you put it down. Don't leave the place a fking mess, put it back."
"I... I don't think it's mine, but I'll put it back anyway."
"Thanks!" said dripping with sarcasm.

The guy who was told to put the weight back went straight to the lockers, got his bag and left. Probably shat himself.

Mine is those random people that appear, once, and dick about.

Not bothered about newbies, I was one not long ago but those randomers, we had a guy of about sixty wandering round swigging from a bottle of Brandy a few weeks back.

There was a guy yesterday, doing some weird work out programme that involved an Olympic bar and his interpreation of baton twirling, doing some strange clean a jerk/overhead press things, wide berth given as he was bloody dangerous, he then appeared in the pool and was strange there as well, do a length, backstroke then loads of stretching, makes a change from the fat odd bods sat marinating in the manky Jacuzzi for hours.

Then you get teenagers, teenage lads are the worst, they come in all testosterone and bullst and want to show the old blokes how it is done, spotting tends to end up as two guys lifting the same 60 kilos on the Bench press, one on the bench doing 35/40 and the other doing 20/25 from behind. There were two teenage girls in the other day, they were on the bench and were being kept an eye on as they were going to hurt themselves, they got bored and concentrated on selfies though.

Still mainly phones that annoy me, I go in the gym to train, if I am not training it is because my heart is bettering away and I am waiting for it to slow down, not because I want to text, phone, twitter or Facebook.

I see this guy in there, does a set, ten minutes on the phone, he is pretty fat but does a set then faffs with his phone for ten minutes before the next one, monopolising whatever piece of equipment he is on for 30 mins, you just know if he is in he will be in the way.

More and more I think the key to 'real world' strength is short rest periods - 60 seconds or less. Pissing about on phones makes a weights workout useless for that kind of strength and conditioning.

Even after a hard circuits, and todays was one of the hradest I've done for a while (light headed), I put my weights back. I do dominate the Olympic platform for an hour so I think it's good to show how to leave it. When I enter it, it's 50/50 if I have to move st...I did today, had to empty the landmine attachment.

When I was in a gym with a jacuzzi, I hated that, old pigs in there for ages, get out and do some work ffs.

I am not sure about "real world strength" because sometimes you'll need to lift something heavy once, sometimes more than once with a long rest period and sometimes repetitively with little rest. You can train for each eventuality.

But I'd say that general fitness is better served by short (60 seconds or less) than 2 minutes or so and I generally become bored after 90 seconds.
