About 13 months for me. I don't really crave them but I do think sometimes about just having one which I won't as that's what got me the previous time when I managed 8 months.

Off to stay with a friend in Cyprus until 3 September and she's an ex-smoker (currently a vaper). Want to try and come back a non-smoker as doing hopelessly recently.

Glad to hear you are still off them Gus.

What you have experienced are the greatest motivators into giving up and staying off them. We've all seen the warnings and thought yeah whatever that will never happen to me. I know someone who is 95 and they've smoked since birth. When things do happen it really makes you wonder why you ever took the chance and spent a small fortune in the process.

I hope the surgery goes ok for you mate.
Heart surgery went fine !! Got to wait until at least Oct for leg treatment but hey, I'm still alive, feeling not too bad AND STILL NOT BLEDDY SMOKING !

Being a non - smoker is fantastic.

I've just come back from a holiday in USA so decided to give up before I went. It's been 17 days since my last ciggy. I found it much easier as my whole routine was changing for a while anyway. I've hardly had any cravings.

Now I'm back and still not been for one with the smokers in the office. Trouble is, the more I get back into my normal routine, the more it will feel natural to have one. I've not thought about it too much but I'm worried that one day I will be chatting to one of the smokers and they'll offer me one and I'll just take it without thinking!

Anyway, so far so good.

Good idea. My plan is to not have anything at all as half the battle is the habbit. I don't like the idea of replacing one habbit with another one but if I really get the urge then it would be better to go down this route than buying a pack of smokes.

About 10 months for me after almost 50 yrs. Similar to others I also had the wakeup call (blocked leg artery).

Not had a single craving for a real ciggy even when others are smoking around me BUT I have replaced it with another addiction of ecigs (lowest nicotine content) which is the lesser of two evils!! I am sure I would have struggled to quit without them though.

ps....with OH doing the same as well we have saved a fortune .

So.... two years since I started the thread and no prizes for guessing that I'm still struggling. In fact, it hasn't been a struggle since the summer because I've smoked and not really tried to quit.

I have drawers full of vaping gear, nicotine chews and all sorts, but I really don't want it to be another year as they pass so quickly. This thread reminds me what a cock I am.

Cold turkey, with a jar to put in what it costs me every day to smoke. I'm determined to be able to post this time next year with a success story - if that in turn helps one other person, I'll be pleased.

Have you tried proper vaping? Or just those stty excuse for a fake cig that lights up at one end?

Most people who take the advice of others on proper vaping (ask on the vaping thread, I haven't seen you on it at all) seem to switch instantly with no problems and don't generally go back to cigs.

Yeah I've been on them (and on the thread a while back), never quite did it for me, just makes me want to smoke. Just about everyone I know who smoked is now vaping so it's a frustration.

A friend from Cyprus is over for Christmas and I dropped her to the station to visit another friend. She's been vaping for a good few years - realised she'd left her charger behind and said she'd buy a pack of smokes.

Did you try Champix? That's what worked for me after trying everything else!

I had a bad experience. Nightmares like most, but getting in a car to post a letter (for example) then a few minutes later having no idea where I was, where I was going, what I was doing in the car, or in fact whose car it was (ok, the last bit was made up). Was a long time ago, so imagine the drugs have moved on since, but I'm doing this cold turkey tonight. A few days of body adjusting, then it's the easy road wink

I gave up with the help of champix . it has been 3 or four years now. It made me a bit short tempered but I worked in a very calm environment, so that may have helped. I did throw a 2l bottle of pop at my mrs, she caught it and threw it at me. It bounced off my head and funnily enough I never did it again ☺

I only completed the course in half the time.from at least 20 a day ,more if I went out for a drink.
Give it a go,you might be fortunate and not experience any side effects.good luck

it really can be done. I was on 40 Red marlboro a day and had smoked since i was 12 years old. i'm now 56. Have put on a couple of stone, so thats the new challenge, so not really feeling any better to be honest. I downloaded the NHS app and that shows that i've saved £7829.00, so at least I have that, to make it easier.

I could still murder a fag at times, but realise that just one will have me hooked again...

Keep at it.. I tried Champix and Zyban but probably didnt really have the resolve to succeed. I also went on the Alan Carr course twice..Cheap electronic cigs did it for me. Poxy things kept running out of charge and this did the trick. Just convinced myself that i didnt need the habit any longer.

Good luck. When you do kick it you'll be amazed at how easy it really is. Just one day !

Well, I've nearly bagged day one. Trouble is, several times a week I may not have smoked by this time of day. Once the kids are in bed, I'l take the pooch out, hit the man-cave and more than make up for it. Just hitting my first cravings, but feeling confident.
