Do You Give Blood
Discussion
I have started giving as often as I can now, on my 6th donation. As a medical student I'm obviously aware of how blood is used but I'd never seen anyone denied a transfusion so I wasn't really aware of any shortage.
However last year my mum was in intensive care and needed a transfusion, and ever since I've recruited lots of friends to start giving too.
Keep up the good work

I'd love to be able to, despite being afraid of needles after i received 24 units after one operation i wanted to pay my 'debt' back and being O- i thought it would be ideal only to find out i'm not allowed to.
Fortunately (touches wood) I haven't had an op for thirty something years so I'm still allowed to donate and as we're o neg brothers, you're covered Silent1 said:

Been to donate today.
Hopefully it will be a nice Christmas present for some little kid out there.
Usual Crawford's biscuits, no crisps but they did have mince pies which was nice.
It's obviously the time of year for it as it was very busy.

Gave mine last week. Still the standard biscuits but now with tea cakes.
Question, why do they set a time limit for your donation? think it is 15 minutes. Does anybody take this long? Usually mine is out between 5 & 7 minutes.
I assume if you've not managed to fill a bag in 15 minutes it's time to call it quits? Not timed mine but it feels like a few minutes.Question, why do they set a time limit for your donation? think it is 15 minutes. Does anybody take this long? Usually mine is out between 5 & 7 minutes.
Tried to give blood once. They got the needle in and started to extract the blood but pretty soon after my whole arm went hot and prickly and I felt quite light headed. The nurse asked if I was ok, to which I obviously said yes. She then asked me again as apparently I had gone very pale! Told her I felt faint so she pulled the needle out pronto and had the bed tilted to get the blood to my head.
Felt like a right tit, especially as everyone else in there was casually giving blood like it was no big deal. Apparently I should have eaten and drank a bit more before donating. Managed to donate something stupid like 80ml. Still got the donor card and found out that I'm A+. Haven't been back since but have recently signed up as an organ donor to make me feel less guilty!

You really do need to eat properly beforehand, it's a significant fraction of your blood which is going to have an impact. Plenty of water when you are waiting at the session before donating helps too.Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
