Tough Mudder 2013
Discussion
Is anyone doing tough mudder this year?
I've been ‘forcefully’ nominated to join in a team from work for the Scotland tough mudder in August – I’m the standard ‘powerfully built’ PHer but have absolutely no stamina when it comes to cardio, etc and have only ever done weights at the gym. I do a 5 min warm up on the cross trainer before each session but the thought of running 12 miles with 25 fairly tough looking obstacles in between is rather daunting!
Given that i have 6-7 months to prepare what training should i be incorporating into my routine or have i left it too late and will be destined to fail?

Doing the Yorkshire one in September. Any idea how long before registration opens?
I'm not sure, the Scotland one opened for August this month so would guess it will be next month for the September - You can pre-register now though and they'll send you an email with a discount code when the event is open for registration. My mate did it this year. He did some proper runs. Started doing around 4 miles then built up to more. Nothing can prepare you for the terrain but if your cardio levels let you do the distance it's a good start. He's a big guy and does weights at the gym but you will need some long distance stamina stuff too
I'm hoping to do the Belfast one (with added riots) if they ever finalise it otherwise I'll do the Scotland one. I'm already training for triathlons in June so I'm well on my way but the way I see it tough muddder is a 12 mile run split up into 24 half mile runs with obstacles inbetween. You shouldn't have too much trouble with a half mile run.
We did some trial training in november last year for it which involved running around a forrest park then crawling through mud, climbing trees or over forrest obstacles and repeat till we had enough.

I did the North west one last November and I'm doing the south one this year (registered for it but venue not confirmed yet, hopefully that will be a bit warmer as the November one was bloody freezing.
To prepare I did running, weights and Insanity. Didn't really need much of it as I ran as part of a team of 10 and as some of the team hadn't done much training we had to go round at the slowest pace.
Good fun though which is why we're doing another one

Did it last year in Kettering. It was awesome! I was doing triathlon training at the time so was in reasonable form anyway but my friends trained specifically for it. They did cardio and some body weight stuff but nothing serious of either to be honest. I think it really comes down to how much effort you want to put into getting a great time. We were relatively relaxed as a couple of our team were carrying ongoing niggles so we didn't hugely push it.
Sadly can't do it this year, wedding is too close(!), but will do it again in 2014.
