Guillemot, Thank you for your reply, this actually crossed my mind but I am not sure. My friend is a very private person and I'm not sure she will want that type of attention. I'm going to call a mutual friend in next day or so so will see what they think.

I never got chance to talk Christmas for my friend. I never even got chance to chat to her again, my good friend age 44 passed away last night. Feeling lost right now. At least I know she went peacefully at her Mums and knowing that her Brother had got home from America. Can't quite believe she has gone frown

fking awful disease.
Grandfather had oesophageal cancer, had surgery but died of a heart attack in intensive car 2 days post op.
Grandmother had renal cancer and died during surgery (due to an incompetent surgeon but thats a whole other story)
Last January my mother in law was diagnosed with an astrocytoma ( a stage 4 brain tumour) and after a brave fight died in july.
And this year my brother in law had a fit at work and to cut a long story short he has an even more aggressive brain tumour than his mum. He has had surgery, radiotherapy and is having oral chemo therapy every month and is feeling relatively ok at the moment but his long term prospects are nil, the oncologist told us that it will recur at some point. He is only 49 and we arent expecting him to get to 50.
His worst problem isnt the tumour, it is that when he had his fit he shattered his shoulders and had to have them screwed and plated back together, the surgeon told me it was the worst case he had ever had to do, he spent over 6 hours nailing them back together.

Thank you Guillemot, it has hit me hard but she went as peacefully as is possible with this awful disease so I am thankful for that.

GOG440, you are so right. It is not my first experience of losing someone close because of cancer and their end days were awful.

It is so sad to read of all these people getting this awful illness and my thoughts are with you all.
The battle with the big C continues for my husband. He is so brave and is trying so hard not to let it beat him. The last week he has been eating a bit better and felt a bit stronger. I know its only temporary but we have enjoyed some quality time together and with the family. It really is like living on a knife edge, just don't know what tomorrow will bring.

I'd love to ask as many of you as possible to sign up as a potential donor - it's such a simple process to register - they send you a couple of mouth swabs in the post - return them and that's it. You just might save someones life.

Just signed up and apparently my kit will be on it's way soon. Best of luck to your friend.

Likewise.

(My kit arrived over the weekend, I signed up when Dan first mentioned this, so the kits take a little time to get to you)

Bex, and BlackFlag, I'd love to be as eloquent as the late Russell (drivin_me_nuts) was, but I cannot I'm afraid. Words fail me except to say I am sorry. frown

Until recently I've never really given cancer a lot of thought - it is thankfully not something that runs in our family. Anyway a couple of months back a friend of mine was diagnosed with terminal cancer and is now going through palliative care.

Now my mum has just had biopsy done for suspected breast cancer (spotted on routine screening by the way) and will get the results next week. It isn't certain yet but the doctor did heavily hint we should prepare for bad news based on the tests done so far.

I'm stting myself a bit and just really hoping if it is cancer it will be early stage and curable as I cannot imagine losing my mum at such an early age.

I've been reading up about various treatments and it all sounds pretty horrific really.

What do you mean 'the late'??

Eta, I have searched and found out frown, I never met him but felt like I knew him from his incredible posts (I read all of his posts about his beloved Lily) I can't believe it, life is so f****n cruel at times.

DMN's eloquence will be remembered for a very long time and I doubt anyone will be on a par with his written word but that doesn't make your's any less meaningful, thank you.

Breast cancer is not curable. It is treatable though.

It may be treated and never return.

Good luck to your Mum.

My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 11 years ago at the age of 68. She'll be 80 in November and has never looked so good or been so well. It is something that you can get through and I wish you and your mum all the best.

Thank you, I started searching when I read that, I found his thread from July about having a heart attack and then a follow up about his funeral, just so shocked and very saddened frown

Thanks for that guys - that's awesome.

Friends has had a up & down week - spent two days in intensive care with septicaemia - back on the normal ward now after it was caught early by a switched on nurse.

Then found out they found a '10/10' match donor. Which is obviously good news for now!

The 10/10 match is great Dan, that's exactly what I had in October, and I have so far avoided Graft Versus Host (GVHD). Matching technology is now a lot better, and having more people on the register means we get a better chance at a good match.

I had sepsis a couple of times, at one point had the ICU 'ninjas' as we called them (black jumpsuits) at the end of my bed but got the right antibiotics in quickly and recovered.

I had a check up last week, the consultant was very happy. I am off to the event in Westminster tomorrow as a patient ambassador to speak up for patients on blood cancers, less than 10 months after transplant. Things can and do get better...
