I'm a regular runner but, after changing my running gait a little last week, my achilles has gone up like a balloon frown

What's weird is that it was fine straight after my last run, and pretty OK the following day. It felt a little tight around the top of the tendon/mid-calf but certainly not debilitating. Day 3 though....ouch.

I tried an ice pack on Day 2, 3 and 4, but if anything that just makes it worse - very sore to the touch.

The swelling seems to have gone down a bit and it's no longer painful in normal walking, etc. I have a Dr's appointment on Friday to refer to physio.

Meantime:

What can I do training-wise? I can't run, I daren't cycle and I don't fancy going without exercise for too long - I get twitchy after missing one session usually...
The only thing I can think of is swimming? Anyone else had experience?

I twanged my Achilles while training for my first marathon some years ago, could barely walk for a week, felt really disabled. I just waited for the pain to go away, then started running again - gingerly at first. It went 'twaaaang' again at mile 17 or so in the event, so I limped / hobbled the rest of the way. Went away again and never been a problem since. So I would say rest it more than you think you should.

It could be a spur, a small piece of bone thats chipped off and reattached itself causing trouble for the tendon.

I did something to mine a few years ago running down some stairs. Couldn't put any weight on it for a few days and it was well over a week later that I was finally walking normally again. Best to rest as much as possible is what I was advised. Any activity seemed to aggravate it. Not had any problems since though.

I've had problems with my achilles since I did the marathon in 2009.

Requires careful management and as mentioned....more rest than you think.

I'm now running in flats, which stops me heel striking which I feel causes inflamation.

Ease in VERY gently, but ice and heat, ice and heat and ....

job done.

Get in the pool in the meantime.
