Don't really need to be competitive tbh- just show up and have a go, placing well is a bonus. They're great fun- must have down ~20 of them ranging from last place to second place (no 1st yet!) in U90kg up to open weight weight categories. You should have a go, I think you'd do fine smile
-Didelydoo - which comp are you doing mate?

-BALDpuma - you should give it a go, I've only done one novice comp so far but was great fun, and it was a good atmosphere. I've got another couple this year then hoping for a couple of bigger u105 comps next year biggrin

Impressive. Are you training for anything or just because you enjoy it?

With the novice comps, what sort of weights were you lifting?

Would love to give it a go but never done strong man training and didn't want to go in and compete against other 100kg guys that are all repping out 200kg squats and 260kg dead lifts?

Been training for 30 years and ex army and I love it, it really helps me keep my head straight, if I don't train for a few days I start climbing the walls. I balance Cardio with weights as I don't want to get to big, since I left the army I find it hard to keep the weight off.

They vary quite a lot, the one I have done so far was a really light open novice:
1. 250kg tyre flips x5 -> 80kg farmers x20m -> 230kg yoke x20m
2. Log for reps (from floor) 75kg for 60 seconds
3. 170 axle deadlift (although this felt much heavier on an axle) - no starps - reps in 60 seconds
4. Arm over arm Mitsi L200 rope pull for ~20 m.
5. 90kg stone over yoke for reps in 60 seconds

A real range of competitors for that one, if youre interested have a go at some event training as it'll give you a better indication of where you are at - but as said above, novice level is just about getting stuck in really.

Novice deadlift for reps is usually 180-220kg, log usually 75-90kg, 90-110kg stone type of range.

One at my local gym (Resluts- in Aberdeen)
I'll be doing the u90's- fairly light as comps go, but it's been a while since i've done half the stuff! Event's suit me alright, so should do ok.

1) Frame walk for 15m (800mm wide frame):
U90s - 210kg
U105s - 240kg
Opens - 270kg
2) Yoke for 15m
U90s - 250kg
U105s - 300kg
Opens - 350kg
3) Frame Squat for max , last man standing, wraps and belt only, no suits.
4) Log Press for reps
U90s - 95kg log
U105s - 110kg log
Opens - 125kg log
5) Loading event, fastest time wins. Items will be picked up and carried for 5 metres and then loaded onto 52" platform.
U90s - 90kg sandbag, 100kg atlas stone, 100kg beer keg.
U105s - 100kg sandbag, 110kg atlas stone, 100kg beer keg.
Opens - 110kg sandbag, 120kg atlas stone, 100kg beer keg.
6) Natural Stone loading, 5 stones loaded onto 52" platform. Stones will be a combination of granite and natural stone.
U90s/U105s - 100kg-150kg stones
Opens - 110kg- 160kg stones.

Novice comps vary, but I'd say 200kg+ dead, 90kg+ OH, 180+ squat... I was well below these numbers on my first comp, finished last, but had fun- placed better in every comp since. If you fancy it, just give it a go, well worth it, and gives training a purpose smile

Did you wear a belt?

1.5mile warm up run.
4 x 500metre quick run straight into 500metre slow run followed by 25 pressups.
1.5mile warm down run.

2 weeks since I last did this so feet were sore tonight and shoulders were definitely sore.

Today>

Log clean & press:
1,1,2,3x 85kg
5,5,2x 85kg (1 motion - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daRibK5fNdg )
Felt weird as I've been only jerking with a bar for months! Will take a bit of getting used to, but should get the weight up soon enough.

Squat (highbar):
3x 100kg
3x 140kg
2x 160kg
5x 180kg
Glute pain as I let my hips shoot out on the last 2 reps, made the last rep very tough as I couldn't use my ass..... fking glute.... ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FPBGhMD9Q7w )

Did a few 100kg barrel loads to 52".

Decent, forgot how fun strongman was. Need to watch that glute though... smile

Strongman is fun, and keeps you fit.
I really need to pile on some strength, only excuse is I haven't been training as long as others biggrin

Yes I do nowadays, on all but my warmups. Light sets like this i use a stretchy neoprene thing that cost about 9 quid..... p.b. efforts and heavy days i use a proper 4"/10mm PL belt.

I couldn't get on with the push up bars. Have you tried hands off push ups? I find these with a close grip the most comfortable for my wrists.
