interesting vid LG, what he said made sense to me tbh, looked into the guys credentials and he's pretty well regarded and educated in the field tbh'

Like Chris (and as i said) i've always done the upright rows and press behind neck (stopped flyes a few years ago and have never done legg ext as they felt damaging)

although thats 30 years of these without injury I have always had quite a stiff upper middle back with two muscle knotted areas around the middle of my upper back to outer of shoulder blades that no massage has ever been able to sort out.

for a few months I'm going to switch to Military press to replace behind neck, I already dumbell press, reverse upright row (behind back)

any suggestions for a normal upright row replacement?

gota be worth a go, getting older wont be so supportive if there is an underlying injury going on.

eta - making a list of new equipment we'd like for the gym and would really like some dumbell holders for heavy pressing on your own, have any of you got such a thing in your gyms that are any good?

As far as upright row/behind the neck press etc go - if you listened to every coach/physio/Dr about which exercises you shouldn't do, there wouldn't be any left. Some people may find some don't work for them, in which case use an alternative. I like upright rows as an occasional accessory lift. I will occasinally do BH the neck push press. Quite like them too. Never really done BH neck pull down, but then I very rarely do lat pull downs of any kind - prefer chin ups. Leg extensions are just horrid though, everyone knows that!

Pvapour - dumbbell holders? What do you mean..? A support to pass, and take the weights off you when you start and finish a set? I've never seen anything like that!

Dumbbell rows may be a suitable substitute?
Dunno, don't do them myself.

That's a great idea. I've never seen anything and it can be a right pain getting someone pass them to you.
A pair of freestanding, height adjustable stands would be the way to go so you can use them for shoulders and chest I guess?

dumbbell rows was one of the suggestions so might try that and see how i get on

i'm always open to trying something different, just because I have the years under my belt and nothing is (on the surface) injured as such, its a small adjustment to my routine and could get rid of knots, something different, I was fancying trying military anyway as they seem very popular, i know its going to feel an incredibly strange movement to start with though, may keep press behind going while i get used to them so as not to loose any power, as I've seen some good increase in strength in this area recently as i've been giving it some focus to cap my shoulders.

exactly that, a spare pair of hands as I always have to get them up there on my own, we used to have something similar many many years ago in an old gym but they were poorly engineered so nobody used them, interesting that you guys have never seen anything, I may have to build some, trick would be giving hands access whilst some form of prong supported plates, with 55kg jobies the balance point would be tricky for the support but probably doable.

will poke around for a bit, if no luck then i'll get the welder out biggrin

eta - the ideas are out there but this would be very hard to get hold of the dumbbells

quite like this idea, as long as you can safely chuck them in the buckets at the end without it tipping you and the bench over and breaking all your mirrors! hehe

seems DD is doing a sideline as 'king of the gym' aka Alex hehe

Quick question.
What do you guys do when you're 'finished' at the gym but mentally don't want to stop.
This morning I didn't want to stop, at all but I couldn't actually finish the extra sets I tried.

You can stop OR you can flail around looking a bit daft and quite possibly injuring yourself hehe
In all seriousness your body will tell you when enough is enough and you should listen to it. Lately im the exact opposite. I get the job done and cant wait to get out

I do drop sets anyway. (Where you finish the set and then drop the weight and start again with no rest)

If that's what you meant.

Kind of, yes.
I work my way up to my working weights and if still full of energy I'll do a few more reducing the weight.
e.g.
warmup sets then
5 x 60
5 x 80
5 x 100
5 x 80
8 x 60

start planning your next session with that passion, still wanting to train is a good way to end your training as it means you're not overtraining, bottle the motivation by planning and looking forward to tomorrow and doing something different.

Its the most powerful tool you have, use it smile MENTAL hehe

1hr Chest & tris done, finished with some pics to track the next 6 weeks getting into shape.

As in today? Bit late for wisdom if so!

All I'd say is wait for and pay attention to the judges calls. Nothing worse than failing because hit rack to early. If you're going with her it really helps to have someone to fill weight slips in etc so all she has to do is lift
Haha! No no. It's a push pull on the 11th. She trains with a PT so he will be there to do all the thinking for her!

Thanks for that, I'll pass it on.

A hilly 65km bike ride yesterday, small group. Had good legs, bit frustrating having to wait for the slower riders, never mind. Really good session at the gym in the evening, then today, hilly 8km run. Quads nice and sore.

http://www.scottishpowerlifting.com/event/pushpull-scottish-bench-competition/

Hopefully she'll do ok. She'll lifting at 63kg. I think she's aiming for something like a 120kg deadlift and a 57.5 bench.

still open on which type of training to add to my normal gym work

callisthenics, cycling, running etc

then watched some Reebok Crossfit stuff last night & think this could suit me, watched Mikko Salo in particular performing 13.5?

seems a few of you practice the exercises in CrossFit, anyone compete? I'm guessing Spartan events were born from this to, which is what I'd like to do anyway...

20mile ride done this morning, quite hilly 1:05 (not very good)
