Can't say I am. I am a runner at heart which has always put me in semi-decent condition for cycling. Always loved cycling though and used it when I was injured from running etc. Also love mountain biking but if my balance doesn't improve considerably I don't think I'll be able to go mountain biking again.

My bike I use (and will be using for the sportive) is a Bianchi Infinito 2011....

Not the best for the price I know, but I adore the frame geometry. I've upgraded the wheels, too smile

Great to see you doing this, Ross. Keep up the good work, you're a true inspiration.

Guys....we need to support Ross. I am shamelessly going to keep bumping this. He has already raised over £5.000. So please just a fiver.. Yesterday Ross rode over 40 miles in training....must of us would struggle with 4 miles!!! Remember 5 months ago Ross was in a critical care ward having had a tumour dug out from his Brain and now riding 40 miles. This event is happening in July and I know he would love to get to £10,000 so, please get donating. Thanks.

Thanks guys. As I've said before, I really don't view it as myself being the inspiration....it's you guys. You guys have supported me more than you can imagine through what has been the worst part of my life. It is you guys who sit at your computers or on your phones and read my seemingly endless gibberish, and who have been kind beyond belief in donating an awful lot of money. All I've done is pay £33 for my entry fee....although I will be spending a fair sum getting the bike fully serviced at the end of next month with a new chain, cassette, gear/brake cables etc etc if that counts hehe

But you know what? I appreciate life now more than I ever have done. I have learnet a lot about myself, my friends, my family and generally that there are a lot of good people out there. I've also, sadly, learned that some people are not there when you think they might be.

Cycled 18.3 miles this morning, will probably have tomorrow off.

Had a patient of mine hand me £60 and said to put it in the donation fund so I've added that this evening too. £5140 now biggrin

No real updates to speak of except a couple of minor ones...

I called my consultants secretary today to ask about my MRI scan results (or rather, how I'd get them) and they said it would be a phone call in 1 or 2 weeks time on a Thursday morning.

Donations keep coming in, now standing at £5175 which is epic.

Went out on the bike this morning for a very hilly ride around the Meon Valley which was only 42 miles but took me 2hrs 50.....when you consider I did 40 miles in 2hrs 26 the other day it suggests how much harder the route was.

Pic of the "steed" whilst on a short food break!

I keep having people tell me to rest instead of cycle but this does my mental health so much good, and Mr Grundy himself said to go for with regards to exercise so....why not biggrin

On another note, it was mentioned a long time ago that whilst in ICU I lost 8kgs. The weight is almost back on but I'm still approx 2-3kgs lighter than I used to be. Thuis morning I was only 8st5lbs. I'm eating good amounts of food and don't feel like I could eat a great deal more....but oh well, I'm not horrendously underweight. weighing scales say about 72% water, just 5.9% fat (a fair way below the lower end of normal) but over 54% muscle (42% is average...but this will partially be higher because I don't have much fat!)

edit - I've also got a shopping list for various bike bits and have booked it in for a full service for the beginning of July. In total will be approx £300! Still, I don't want any avoidable problems come the big day!

Pic not showing on the post, but click on the little icon and it'll show it. Not sure why!

Please tell me Mr Grundy's first name is Solomon - Older readers will know what I'm on about it but you youngsters may need Google.

Will the bike shop loan you a top of the range bike for the chaity event (I don't know much about bicycles so apologies if yours is THE best). It would be good publicity for them and would help you.

Maybe they could donate one for you to do the ride on and then auction it afterwards?

haha, unfortunately not, his first name is Paul!

I haven't considered borrowing a bike from the shop. I'm happy with mine, it's a pretty dcent bike. Cost around £2200....full carbon frame etc and I've upgraded the wheels (these were around £350-400 IIRC) and also a few bits of the groupset.

just 10mins ago got back from 18.5 miles.....legs didn't feel too bad at all considering yesterdays ride.

Thanks again chaps. This thread has proved that there are still a lot of good guys out there!

Maybe you should think about turning this thread into a book with any proceeds split between you and your chosen charity?

Ha, not something I'd considered but I'm not sure there would be much market for something so readily available for free.... And reading posts about me getting washed by some nurses hehe

Thanks Tyre Tread! I try to do my bit where I can! I've never really done much for charity in the past bar the odd donation here and there so this was something quite new to me. Very glad I did it be canon awful lot of money is going to a good cause, and a cause which doesn't get a great deal of funding etc.

On a short break between patients but have had another patient of mine donate a fiver, and another has said he'll donate over the weekend which is great. Had a few put some coins in the collection tin at work too. Reckon I'll get a few hundred quid from work going in.

Still over 2 months to go yet!

Cheers everyone.

No major updates, just a few minor points.... If anyone is remotely still interested!?

Got an email from my gastro-enterologist registrar (the chap who sent me for my first head MRI) asking how my recovery was going etc which I thought was really nice! He was asking how my symptoms were etc etc.

Not been on the bike since Thursday due to a slightly sore hip, but running has been fine. Will give it another few days and see what happens.

Got another email from the charity today and one of the top people there wants to meet me.... So they're coming down on Wednesday morning for a little chat which should be interesting! Will see how that goes.

Treated myself and the bike to a few things... Bike is booked in for major service at the start of July so it'll be in as-new condition (the place I use are meticulous in detail, but they do charge for it, but it's justified). Also ordered myself some stuff like energy drinks, new pair of cycling shorts and few other bits and bobs! Not cheap but I want to ensure any problem which could potentially arise be prevented before it happens, as knowing my luck it'll break on the 25th of July!

Will certainly try to be getting plenty of pics. I should be having a friend with me on the ride so can at least get pics before, at the food stops and after the event. May be able to get a few during but doubt it.... Though there are professional photographers there (that's how I got that pic of me on the bike on my just giving page) so that's another couple there too.

Bike bits should be arriving tomorrow biggrin

To save people having to hunt the JustGiving link, here it is again.

Firstly, thank you for your donation. Secondly...that's a seriously tall order. I doubt it's possible but we shall see.

I have just had a phone call from a journalist at the Daily Echo and spoke to them for about 30-40mins about my symptoms before my surgery and the major details leading up to diagnosis etc, the surgery and a little about after it as well. They will be running it in their features section either Saturday or Tuesday. That may generate a couple of donations, but we shall see. Instead of chatting on the phone I should have directed her to this link hehe

Whether £10k gets reached or not.....I couldn't have possibly imagined reaching the amount I have at this stage, so any more is just a very nice bonus!

I tried "bigging up" Wessex neuro by saying the care I had was really good (which, to be fair, it was).

Mr Grundy said to keep him posted on it all....what do we reckon, send him a message now, saying that it will be in the Echo on either Saturday or Tuesday or forward him a copy of the article (by post?) as a "surprise" with a little thank you note?

I'd send a link to this thread to the Echo, they may be interested on how it all happened. I can't imagine Haymarket (PH's owner) would mind. You might even squeeze a donation out of them for the free publicity. It'd be nice to see PH mentioned in the press in a positive light, it's usually in the context of speeding or some such bad boy behaviour.

Done smile

Whether they decide to mention PH or not is another matter, but one thing is for sure....it'll certainly give them enough info to write whatever they want hehe

I did send the team an email a few days ago.....when I was in hospital they all sent me a get well/Xmas card which I thought was a nice gesture; so just a belated thank you to them....may have cheekily mentioned my just giving page (saying that the generosity from fellow members is amazing); not heard anything back yet though hehe

Cheers

Awesome story and amazing strength of character. Donation on its way...
