Excellent.

It will be quite a lift to be out of the ward, though you've been amazingly chirpy 'inside'. Onwards and upwards!

Not on the same level but I'm currently at home recovering from a broken neck of the femur so I wish you all the best for your recovery.

I've not been through half as much as you but did have similar problems with peeing after GA and a catheter, gladly things are back to normal now. I was so relieved to be able to just have a pee by myself!

I'm on crutches for a minimum of 6 weeks until my follow up x-ray at the beginning of March and physio starts Monday so I'm looking forward to that and hopefully a quick'ish recovery.

One benefit of all this is that we have a 4 week old son so I'm getting a lot of time with him but avoiding the nappies and night feeds, I'm sure to never live that down!

Anyway, all the best.

Double vision still there. I'm not convinced it's any better.... Friends and family maintain my eyes are more closely lined up than they were.... So perhaps it's slightly better but the progress is perhaps so slow I've not really noticed.

Does your hospital have an eye department they can refer you to? Stick on Fresnel prisms can be put on your glasses to align the images from your two eyes and help give you binocular vision again. Put on one lens slightly opaque but at least you can use both eyes and easily changed as you recover. Also the brain is a very clever instrument and often re-learns and compensates for damaged eye muscles the orthoptists can plot this on a Hess Chart
Otherwise most decent opticians can do the same thing.
Inspirational post wishing you all the best for the future

That hole is tiny! Give it a decade and add some wrinkles and you'll never know it was there. smile

HelenT - I'm not actually sure of there is an eye department, I'm pretty confident there is though. I was to yesterday that the referral has gone through, it's just a question of waiting now. Quite frustrating but..... That's life!

OpulentBob - the hole is indeed tiny isn't it! I was really surprised when I got showed the picture!

Cheers everyone smile

Great news!

Wishing you all the best. When do you think / hope to be able to start driving again? I assume your eyes need to be sorted first.

I've no idea when really..... I don't need my eyes sorting because you can legally drive with one good eye, so that means if I cover one eye I'm OK on that front. Technically I have not been told I can't drive so legally I'm still allowed to. But I'm being sensible and not driving. I'll have to wait and see. I did (perhaps stupidly) let the DVLA know. I got a letter a week or 2 back saying they written to my consultant but hadn't heard back yet.

In other news a few interesting things following removal of the tracheostomy. Firstly.... I survived the night. That's the main thing. But 2 other very interesting things I noted....

1 - since having it out I've barely coughed at all. I was told they need changing every now and again as they get dirty.... It's possible I never had a cough/cold it that I was coughing because the tracheostomy was getting very dirty!

2 - I was, without fail, waking up with erm 90-120 mins to go to the toilet. I was rarely desperate for the loo but couldn't get back to sleep with that "I could go" feeling. Well, last night I went to bed at 2230, I woke up feeling like I really needed the loo. I assumed, like normal, it was about midnight. It was 0330. Went back to sleep. I woke again to go to the loo, I assumed it was a out 0200 or so as it normally would have..... It was 0800!! I have blackout blinds so couldn't tell if it was daylight. Maybe I was sleeping poorly due to tracheostomy? Who knows but I've just had the best nights sleep since surgery.

Gotta go back to the ward later as I left my phone charger there, no biggy.

The good thing about going in the last couple of days wad that I saw the nurse I really liked biggrin she remembered me well which was good.... Well, maybe! hehe

Don't feel bad about complaining what you're going through. As someone else said, just because someone is going through worse it doesn't make your situation better. Likewise, people have gone through worse than what I've been/am going through.

Running..... No idea. The sooner the better. It's a shame, I used to run to a fairly decent level (5k in under 17mins, 10k in under 35, 10miles in 59 flat, half marathon in 1:18) so running was a massive part of my life that's completely been taken away. I was still running when I was being sick every day, though it wasn't easy. I'll try running soon although I'll make sure I'm with someone and will literally just go around the block. I have to wait for the tracheostomy site to heal first!

Yes, I've been through a bit of st but I've got a lot to be thankful for. I'm still alive (something which running and my fitness was quite a key factor in my survival apparently). I've had brilliant care for some wonderful Dr's and nurses (some of the nurses are rather nice!), I've got some amazing friends and family who have been super, my boss at work has been great and said not to worry about my job and that it'll be waiting for me when I get back.... and lastly I'm showing signs in pretty much every area that I'm improving.

One thing I've learned now is not necessarily look at what you've lost, but look at what you still have.

Very grown up stuff Ross. This has been typical of your attitude from day one and the reason many of us are so pleased at your remarkable progress.

No idea.... When I feel I'm ready I guess! Will be a while yet. Part of my job involves talking and explaining things to members of the public.... Lots of talking can be quite tiring. Plus, I need pretty good balance to do what I do so I have to make sure I'm ready. I'll be back as soon as possible.... I want to get back to normality but only when my body is ready.

Chased up optometry department AGAIN and guess what..... They got the referral! But they got it..... Yesterday. How st is that! Been asking since the middle of December for a referral. The referral has to be sent off for grading before they make an appointment.

Pleased it's finally gone through but not happy it's taken so bloody long.

Can you go back part time? Start off with one client a day and build up?

I'll definitely be going back part time initially. 1 patient a day would hardly he worth it. I was thinking of starting off just a few hours a day, maybe 2-3 days a week top initially and make sure I have gaps between patients so I'll have time to rest, or of I run late I have plenty of catch-up time so I don't run late and get stressed etc.

I'm hoping within another couple of months

This was the state of the tracheostomy site last night between changing dressings. Looks like it's healing ok. Sorry for the poor quality picture!
