Remember that the body weight exercises are done to a count with no resting. Your partner remembers where you finished and tells the PTI your score. It's also done topless so prepare to have the piss ripped out of you if you have st tattoos. I would also try and find a gym with ropes to master the rope climbing technique.

For me Paras vrs Marines boiled down to parachuting as I'm st at heights! I have since done a fair bit of fast roping and time on helos though. The main plus point of the paras is that you can be a pure infantry man for all of your career. They do have to rely on other parts of the army though where the Marines use their own specialisations.

An old school friend has done P coy and the all arms commando course. He said the para course was about fast running with low weights over short distances and plenty of sleep. The commando course was about heavy slow movement over long distances and sleep depravation. His opinion was that the commando course was harder.

Ha - can't wait for that. Fortunately, I have no dodgy tattoo's!! I'm not great at heights, but feel that I could overcome that if needed. I did realise that the Para's would have other Army regiments for support whereas the Marine's/Navy have that essentially built into the Marine's structure with the different specializations.

Any tips on overcoming shin splints? Caught a dose of them tonight while doing pretty well on my run. Not too pleased about it to say the least! Will be onto the cross trainer, bike and swimming from now for a week or so.

This I didnt know! For PJFT I thought you had two minutes for each bodyweight exercise and it was at PRMC that it was no pauses? Luckily I have no tattoos!

This was something I had a few years back quite badly, I found changing my running shoes helped no end plus alternating between hot (as you can tolerate comfortable) and cold water really calmed it down.
It worked for me though id wait for wiser folk to chip in before trying it smile

I'm so glad I started this thread! So much I hadn't taken into consideration, thanks for the pull up beam vid Chris, having to use a thinner bar at the minute the usual gym ones though use the local scaffolding at night when no-ones about.
I know nothing about RMR testing, but can offer a suggestion based on that video.

Many cable cross overs in gyms have a similar shape to a beam like that. It wont be identical, but it also wont be a thin bar.

Good luck with it.

That's for PRMC but you also do the gym test again at the start of training. There were no body weight exercises on my PJFT. I had a quick look at the RN/RM recruitment website and it only mentions the 2 x 1.5 mile treadmill runs.

ForceV4 have you spoken to your RMR unit? Do you have to pass PRMC before you can attend there midweek? I'd guess their advise and knowledge would be invaluable to you.

If you get shin splints I would give it a rest for a few weeks and do other types of cv. Try running cross country if you can. If you get into recruit training you will see it's one of the more common injuries.

I'm going with lower stress CV work in the gym and pool, and when I start running again I'm going to try a few miles on the grass before anything else. Fortunately have all the facilities around me that I need for that which helps! Would imagine it's pretty easy to pick up with people though but should go away if treated correctly and I don't try and run through it. Made that mistake once before and that was enough!

Dai, yes just emailed my RMR unit today. Apparently the PJFT is just the run and not the press ups etc, they are conducted at PRMC.
I am going to go prepared for both though just in case as all the literature I have received stated that you do need to the exercises.

Also I asked about going to the midweek 'Holding Troop' and apparently I can attend as soon as I have passed medical smile

Update!

Had medical last Wednesday and was deemed temporarily medically unfit. (Apparently this is normal?) This is while they write off to my doctor about a shoulder operation I had a few years ago.

Weighed in at 97kg so from 118kg last summer so that was pretty decent. Now im not eating dust anymore the run time is down to 22:17 at the full 2% incline so almost there smile

Hopefully there are no further issues and I can get my PJFT done soon smile

Fingers crossed!

Don't be.
Its a section of polished railway sleeper on a brass chain that miscreants have to carry everywhere for 24 hours, no matter what you are doing.
At the end of the 24 hours it is polished ( naturally) and handed back.

Mind you I was there in 1978 it may have changed. smile

We had an old truck tyre with a Queen Mary berthing chain attached. This was used as a keyring if someone forgot or lost keys. Mid-eighties.

The thing is Halb its not consistent and its driving me nuts.
I was running everyday for about three months up until the medical, now its done I am doing every other day with the off days for strengthwork.

Whats happens is this, I'll set a good time and then on average for the next three runs I improve on the time. Then after the next one will just kill me, i'll probably be only able to do just over half distance before im blowing, then the next few runs will be spent building up to do the full lot in a good time again.

Why does this happen?? Its massively dispiriting!!!

Because factoring rest is as least as important as the 'doing' phases of any exercise regime. Any good exercise regime will go through building and rest phases - if not you just burn out - as you're experiencing. You need to have rest days. It's at this point that the damage the exerice has done to your muscles heals thus improving the strength / endurance of the muscle. If you keep bashing on then you hinder this repair process.

You would be well served in getting a proper programme done - one tailored to you. And at the risk of offending a lot of people, I would avoid getting one done by someone working in your local gym as people with proper sports science qualifications are few and far between in those places. My advice would be someone who specialises in athletics training.

Wait until you get into training properly.

When I did my basic I was routinely top one or two fitness wise but every now again there would be days when I had legs of lead, I'd be blowing through my arse and had to extract every ounce of energy and willpower to keep going and not let the others or myself down, next day I was fine. Saw it happen to everyone in the platoon at some point.

Everyone is different, what you eat and how you're rested can also make enough of a difference.

Some days you have good runs, some days you don't; don't stress over it, chin up and crack on with it. You'll get there.

Thank you for the above, it just gets me thinking sometimes that what im applying for is no joke and there isn't going to be any scope for 'I dont know, I guess I wasnt feeling up to it.'
Will definitely start looking at getting some proper kind of regime going instead of just hammering constantly at getting under the time.
I just went on thats what they want so lets just get on with cracking it and didnt really think of a structure.
Cheers Andy I was actually hoping someone would say what you have. Thank you.

Blimey. Took a while to dig this out!

Update for any that are interested. Was made temporarily medically unfit, then unfortunately permanently medically unfit.

Fotunately my AFCO told me to appeal it. After much toing and froing it was overturned.

Done my PJFT in March and ran a 09:38 return....a proper hang out. I geniunely believed I was going to die!

Been doing all my Tuesdays and weekends at my detachment which have been invaluable and really opened my eyes up to what 'proper' phys is! Current return time is 09:18 if I can get a sub nine I think i'll actually shed a tear!

PRMC late September, fingers crossed.
