I did the POC and AIB (passed both) for the RM a fair while ago.
Looking around the base, very few were heavily built; just lean, fit and strong.

But they do need big blokes to lug machine guns around ;-)

And yes, RM is Navy not Army.

You're right, I definitely imagine i am more than 10% bodyfat.

I am aiming to drop a lot of the weight, well im going to have too ha. I suffer now for it doing certain activities (dont bench press btw) used to be heavier and it was a pain in the arse.

I am worried about the knees and the excercises but right now its all about dropping the weight just to get through the medical.
Thing is, if you do more running, or cardio and stop doing weights (beyond body weight stuff, as that is all you really need to be able to do) you will slim down a fair bit, obviously if you diet aswell it won't take long I doubt. Good luck.

Nothing like as well as a marine needs to. Look at the requirements, for a male solider they're easy, 1.5 miles in 14 mins or something laughable. For marines its 1.5 miles in 12.30 and then another 1.5 under 10 mins, a world apart.
And this is whats getting me.

I would have to go for PJFT and do the times quoted above on a treadmill at 2% incline.

So far the 12.30 bit i've got nailed, but the 10min......There are currently no words. I know the weight has a lot to do with it.

The thing that is getting me is that if I do manage to do it, which I genuinely believe I can, what if I get binned for something else?

But im 29 and no spring chicken so its a case of now or never.

Seems like you really want it so how long will it take to burn the fat and muscle down? You can always get it back later and as you say you've only got limited time for the RM entry.

There was bound to be one person who did the I'm really heavy but its not fat.....I just play rugby/box/whatever....and really wasn't fat!

And thats a far better nickname than ForceV4!

Is the BMI test on the same day as any other fitness tests?

You could drop an awful lot of water weight to get you under in a short period of time

Yes but it will be for the best to lose it for good, for reasons stated. There's a good reason you don't see many very heavy endurance athletes, because its hard on the joints, and make no mistake, they are much more endurance than anything else.

Few of the many Marines I have met have been burly blokes.

Yup from what I saw last night that definitely was accurate but I did draw faith from the fact that there was a Sergeant there who was my height and did have a bit of size to him so its doable smile

I'm not sure if im honest, but I dont think it is. I believe it is on the same day you do the aptitude tests.

You need to start running, now, and don't stop until you've lost 10kg or your body breaks - which it probably won't, probably. I imagine combined with a decent diet you could do it in 6 weeks.

Black Jesus good luck ;o)

A mate of mine who was really into lifting, thus was pretty sizeable, and a similar age decided to join the RMR. He attended the training evenings in Bristol and get a real idea of the sort of thing he needed to be able to do and then went and did that on his own too.

He talked of cross country runs with suitable low hanging branches for on-the-go pull-ups and the like. If you're dedicated enough to be in the shape you're in, I reckon a switch of focus and you'll go just fine.

I reckon you'll be fine. But do run a lot and do some of it with a backpack.

Running with a full webbing belt, rifle and kit is SO much harder than you'd think!

Lympstone is a cracking place too.

For medical reasons I had to get down to my "correct" BMI. I did, 40lbs in six months. The formula is simple, less intake and more exercise. It works. The end result was a guy who looked unhealthy and felt weak. The only thing that was good about me was my weight. I gradually gained more weight over time as I was fed up with people asking me if I was ill!

Feck me, if everyone on the front-line looked like this, war would be a thing of the past! Imagine having this gent running towards you with the 'ump!

Good luck op, hope it goes the right way for you.

By his own admission...you'd just have to run away (7 min mile pace should be just enough) wink

But if your a big boy, does that not make you a bigger target therefore more chance of getting hit?
