It's strongman, strongman has always had high reps and endurance work.
I remember OD Wilson whinging about it in 1990 after being pipped by the much faster Jón Páll, if he wanted pure single rep strength he should have stuck to powerlifting.
Was that on the brick carry? Jon Pall was cooler than OD all the way.... I remember OD Wilson whinging about it in 1990 after being pipped by the much faster Jón Páll, if he wanted pure single rep strength he should have stuck to powerlifting.
Power lifting is for 1RM stuff, strongman should be a mix of both IMO- some 1RM, some max reps, some moving/timed stuff.
That comp is pretty light though TBF, even for a novice comp (which I presume it is)

Hmm, maybe? I remember the whinging, not the race. Power lifting is for 1RM stuff, strongman should be a mix of both IMO- some 1RM, some max reps, some moving/timed stuff.

"Leading the competition with a comfortable 5½ points before the last event - a 200m race with a 100 kg weight on the back - the very heavy 400 lb Wilson lacked the endurance and running speed to complete the course quickly and ended up losing by just half a point to the much lighter Jón Páll Sigmarsson in the overall."
Just looked at the weights....I could train for that, close too...but it would fk up my 10k training.
Last time I deadlifted 'heavy' it was 205 x 6 x 2. Few years ago now. Last deadlift was (last April) part of Crossfit's Lumberjack 20, 120kg x 20.
The 80kg press...wouldn't do very well there. Not sure what that last one means either. I could do the 100kg x 20metres. I do that in my gym anyway. 100kg x 50metres.

My best for 180kg is 9. Definitely under a minute as they were consecutive. Don't ask for a video or I'll have to knock out 12
do you use a belt? I can't use one whilst repping and cardiovascular lets me down too
I'm better at repping higher weights
Do you agree it's not really a strongman competition when you're doing 15+ reps on deadlift? In fact this whole comp is cardiovascular based
I only have 190kg of weights so I don't have a choice, I have to be good at repping them

IIRC the Stone over yoke involves picking up an Atlas Stone, lifting it over a bar and then dropping it. Once its rolled back to your feet pick up and repeat.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/O.D._Wilson

@didelydoo yes it is a novice, too light in fairness but a good test for cardio side, plus there's someone there I want to beat
@halb, farmers is 100kg a hand not total , yoke is like running/fast walk with a squat bar but its a like a H shape and weights go on bottom. 20kg hold will be piss for you (I'm ste at it) amd AlexS has it right about stone over yoke.
@V8mate I recommend you don't wear them unless absolutely necessary, my friend who came over last week had his palms bleeding during our training session and he just taped them up, will grow back harder. If you must get some, get the leathery type stuff and fingerless for maximum grip

you should still try halb! First website I came across, something like these that will grip the weight http://www.supplementwarehouse.co.uk/Mobile/MBSCPr...

Have you chaps got any recommendations for weightlifting gloves?
I've got some RDX ones at the moment but need to get another pair as these are slightly too large in the palm and are twisting.
So I thought I'd ask before simply ordering the same gloves one size down
I use RDX too, really rate them.I've got some RDX ones at the moment but need to get another pair as these are slightly too large in the palm and are twisting.

What's the purpose of the gloves for you? Is it to protect your hand or improve friction?I've got some RDX ones at the moment but need to get another pair as these are slightly too large in the palm and are twisting.

Purely out of 'relative' curiosity, what kind of weights are you chaps playing with for deadlift reps?
Not interested in the 'I did one or two lifts at xxkg' stuff; actual training reps. Three sets of ten lifts, for example. And how does that compare to your bodyweight?
I only did them for the second time this morning (first time on Wednesday); initial target is my bodyweight (which is 100kg to the nearest 10kg)
Toda's sets were
10 x 70kg
10 x 80kg
10 x 90kg
I'm finding that the bar is slipping from my hands, so for the last few in each set I'm almost at fingertips. I tried the 'one forward, one backward' grip, but couldn't get on with it. Do I need to persist with mastering that hand grip to stop heavier weights slipping?
I find that liquid chalk is essential for deadlifting now. So much easier than straps and not "cheating" as such. Not interested in the 'I did one or two lifts at xxkg' stuff; actual training reps. Three sets of ten lifts, for example. And how does that compare to your bodyweight?

(Currently repping at 130kg)
I'd also say the alternated grip is essential also, as the bar will almost certainly roll in your hands at higher weights (80kg+)
They're good reps for starters, I don't do deads that often, as I incapacitate myself for cycling and footy, but my last set was
12 x 60kg
10 x 80kg
8 x 100kg
8 x 120kg
6 x 140kg
4 x 160kg
2 x 170kg
2 x 180kg (new PB too, no dropping either, controlled movement)
I weigh 80kgs.
So I also can say that they're not something you 'have' to do regularly to see improvements.
With large compound movements, due to the size of muscles worked, big and heavy seems to be a good way of stimulating them, as they're not used to it, whereas I feel burning higher reps on smaller isolated muscles seems to work better, in any case, listen to what your body is telling you and find out what works.

To bulk you need to be in calorie surplus.
So BMR + Calories burnt + x amount of excess calories
are you clean or dirty bulking? Just out of interest

Eating clean. I just ate anything last time I tried to bulk and ended up putting some fat back on, so doing it more carefully this time.
