In any other generic multi site gym I've ever been too I have not seen any instructor give good guidance on the rower or on weights. They really dont know the equipment like they should. The number of times I'd be rowing and some newbie with pt next to them explaining the movements totally wrong was exasperating. So to expect the xfit ones to be on a par with olympic coaches is unfair.

This is true - but the gym instructor doesn't claim to be someone special and is likely only REPs 2 qualified. They're also just there to help beginners understand how to use the kit and wipe down benches not to make you the next fittest man in the world.

There is so much bks talked in the "fitness" industry, it's become and extension of the fashion industry and is all pretty meaningless.

The fact is that for the vast vast majority of people keeping their fitness and weight in an area that is healthy and conducive to a good lifestyle is really very simple, you don't need to risk injury by lifting heavy things.

It's only that fact that 40% of the population are so grossly overweight and unfit and that selling the unobtainable Mens Health cover boy image to gullible narcissists is so profitable that fuels these all this bullst talk about "form" "crossfitting" and the "bio availability of protein" etc... etc...

^^^^ I agree. I've pursued that for a few years and due to one relapse or another I'm not far off from where it started. I'm just gonna take it gently and not think I'm a young buck any more. Aint ever going to have a pack cos I like food and beer. Not willing to change this for vanity.....having been obsessed with targets and pushing hard with Xfit and rowing I've neglected other parts of my life I want back.

Mmm. I think that's why most people end up losing the battle. To me, good health/fitness is about making it fit around your lifestyle. Sure, you'll have to change some things but I ain't giving up single malts or family meals.

I make time to lift, though. It doesn't take that much time, really, anyway.

I've been utterly put off cross-fit for life entirely by the attitude of it's fans.

As far as I can tell it's a heady mix of circuit training, the Atkins diet and quite unbelievable arrogance. "your workout is my warm up" and all that bullst, my FB feed was full of people posting videos of themselves doing pull ups and pictures of bleeding palms like it was a good thing, well only when they weren't looking down their noses at people going to 'box gyms'.

We lost some friends to Crossfit, they started it as Winter Training when it was too dark to Mountain Bike, I prefer swimming and just getting to the 'box gym' once week.

Anyway they returned briefly, yes they looked 'bigger' some even had 6 packs, after several hours of explaining they would now show the rest of the group just how powerful and amazing they were now - we started riding, what followed was a display of some of the most painful riding I've ever seen, they seemed to have the lung capacity of asthmatic old ladies and for all their power, they were as weak as kittens - suspected they'd been using roids or something, turns out we tricked them - their God (or Gym leader) told them that they were so massive now that they're constantly tired from training and doing any sort of real sport would only undo all their hard work.

We don't speak much now, but some went a bit weird and grew beards, others love the tan in a can a bit much - and [shudder] I've seen a couple of duck pouted selfies by near middle aged men.

It seems to have spread like wildfire near me, every former yoga / kettle bell place is now CrossFit.

I've never heard a bad thing about it from people who actually do it.

I've seen lots of bad things said by people who've never tried it.

I was planning on starting this month but due to location and cost I've started at a dedicated S&C centre instead.

Yeah but they can outlift a cyclist and out-cycle a lifter.

TBH I'm quite surprised their fitness levels have dropped. I thought the whole point was that it made you fitter. I mean that Froning is the fittest man in the world.

"Fittest man in the world" - a title won as a crossfit event ha ha - that'll be that arrogance coming through again.

It's akin to 'Phil the Power' claiming to me the fittest man in the world for winning a Darts event ha ha.

No it appears their fitness hadn't dropped at all, that was the mistake we all made that day, no they were simply exhausted by all their fitness - in order to actually be good at sport as a crossfitter you need to stop CF for several days, even weeks to allow your body to recover from it's awesome power, but if you do that you'll undo all your good work which will kill all your fitness stone dead - no Crossfit is like the Nuclear deterrent of Sports training.

Looking through the universities database t'other day I found a journal that suggested Crossfit may be beneficial for anaerobic fitness. As in short bouts of high intensity exercise. It's reasonable to assume this is not far off the mark although if one wanted to improve anaerobic fitness there's a number of better methods. I'd suggest that like many sports the champions of Crossfit are genetically predisposed to their choice of exercise.

Do some grow beards? I imagine this is role modelling. Does Froning or any of the top guys have hairy faces? I know some of the WOD are military based (tenuously) so maybe it's a SEAL beardy yank thing.

Yes, he does. I suspect Crossfitters are encouraged to grow beards for carb-shaming purposes. Beards catch crumbs so fellow Crossfitters can check each other's beards to make sure they're strictly Paleo. If not they get booted in the box, which I expect stings a bit.

To be good at a thing you have to do that thing.

Crossfitters are fitter than darts players though.

very funny!

I think they're definition of fitness is all roundedness. Mine from medical training was ability for heart rate to recover post exercise...but heyho! The feeling that you know better about weights etc is true and leaves you wanting to tell others how great you are. My nephews are big strong rugby lads and have st clean and jerk techniques but that doesnt matter...as amount lifted isn't of concern..just that you're working those muscles hard. My aerobic certainly dropped as used to be acdc about rowing. Lost about 4secs off my 500m pb doing Xfit.

But these people never try it because they know it's bad. You know sticking a pencil up your nose and nutting your desk is a bad thing, and you don't do it exactly because of that.

Smart people don't make stupid mistakes...

As someone who's primary responsibilities in safety and progress is in teaching good form, I've seen exactly all I need from crossfit.
