I've got my first sprint tri next weekend. Being my first event I'm just after some advice for best nutrition before the event.

Anything people can recommend for either the night before meal and breakfast?

I've only done a few triathlons but many marathons and halves and I can't see why the nutrition/carb-loading etc. would be any different. I used to go with some simple pasta like a spag-carbonara the evening before and my usual breakfast of bran-flakes with milk and tea. Then perhaps a sticky grain bar during the race. I'd say just do what you do before a training run and don't forget you can leave a drink and bar by your bike at your transition and grab it as you go off on the run.

Couple of wheatabix in the morning. Make sure to eat at least two hours before otherwise it might give you stomach cramps when swimming. Night before some pasta and a bit of protein wont hurt. No spicy or strong sauces though. Nothing worse than chilli burps when swimming.

Don't bother with gels and bars. Its only a sprint and even if you are very slow you should still be done in under two hours so you wont need it.

If the weather is hot though pop a Zero tab in one of your drinks bottles to replace some electrolytes.

For a sprint you really don't need to fuel-load. Keep it easily digestible - a couple of bananas and a glass of milk maybe for breakfast; fish/chicken/pasta the night before.

True, I hadn't thought of that. More like a half marathon in duration which as you say just needs water.

My normal breakfast on most days is a few weetabix and a banana. I think I'l just stick to this but make sure I eat it all early enough.

My swim time is 8am in the first wave which I'm happy about as there won't be much waiting around when I get there

Do this, don't eat anything you're not used to and if it's more than 600 calories, leave a good few hours between the start of the swim and the breakfast, I'd be eating around 4am with a nice breakfast and then a banana an hour to 90 minutes before.

Don't drink or eat anything you're not used to, including stuff like Lucazade Sport. You should know from your training about what foods your body can cope with.
