An appeal to PH.

The 21 year old son of my best mate has just been diagnosed with Leukaemia. A wonderful boy with everything to live for.

The diagnosis was 5 days ago, already he's had 2 blood transfusions.

He has asked everyone he knows to become a Blood Donor.

Please, if you can, sign up.

H67.

I used to, would love to, but years in Africa and a near-fatal bout with Malaria means I can't. Real pity!

I'm due my 3 monthly lie down and cup of tea soon I think.

Been doing it for years. A few people from the office started recently too, so we all go together now!

Usually 4 months between now - is for me anyway.

Best of luck to the lad. thumbup

His consultant might have already told them but if not point them in the direction of CLIC Sargent. Fantastic charity supporting young people with cancer. It isn't just financial help for the travelling to appointment etc but the support from people that have been there and can explain everything that's going to happen is invaluable.

I give blood when I can, but for the past three times I've been turned away due to low iron frown.

Going next week, another pint of B+

Our eldest had x3 transfusions when he was 20mths old, saved his life... I donated occasionally before, now book my next donation as I finish the current one.

Best wishes to your mate's son smile

Not good news today I'm afraid. A routine heart scan prior to chemo picked up a life threatening blood clot on his left ventricle. Has been transferred to Kings London.

Poor, poor boy.

At least they've found it and he's where they can sort it.

Hopefully he'll be out drinking and shagging in no time. smile

It changed a year ago or so from 4 months interval to 3 for male donors.

I'm on 12 donations now, need to get one booked though, as I'm eligible to donate in a few weeks.

I've received a transfusion so I'm barred for life, although I did donate before; hopefully screening tech will improve soon so I can donate again.

Takes half an hour (and most decent employers would have no problem allowing you to take time off to do it) and I'd almost say it's therapeutic in a way.

It's a shame the old truck in London has been replaced with a silly little van that really isn't suitable for the job.

No, no real news at the moment. Popped in to see his grandparents this morning, unsurprisingly they are not in a good place and very worried.

Poor lad is feeling a bit cut off from the world in Kings, apparently very on/off web/phone connectivity for some reason. Plus of course being 70 odd miles from home it makes visiting harder for everyone.

I believe he's due for another heart scan today to try and deal with this blood clot.

Thanks for asking.

Same for me having recieved 15 units in childbirth. I'd only been brave enough prior to that to donate about 5 times so I'm really upset I cannot pay back what I've had. frown

I gave blood regularly for over 30 years; it's something most people can do very easily. Sadly I can't any longer due to medical conditions otherwise I'd still be there twice a year.
