Have a look at this:

http://hprc-online.org/physical-fitness/performanc...

Its US Navy Seals rather than Marines but there is bags of information in here and it is specifically aimed at what you want to do.
Pretty cool resource - thanks. Will definitely give that a read and have decided that following their training schedule on the website (as linked above) would be the best course of action. Buffer that with a much healthier diet and less beer, I should be well on my way shortly.

Really appreciate anyone taking the time to contribute.

My lil bro is a RM officer, passed POC twice, AIB once then in.

few track sessions a week with the local running club,
gym pretty much every day
swimming, triathlons, rugby, cycling.

he is in the top third of this batch gym and fitness wise.

ill dig out his gym routine if you want

squats 20 25 25 20
weighted pull ups 6 8 8 6
alt knee to elbow 20 25 25 20
box jumps 15 20 20 15
tri dips 15 20 20 15
half sits 25 30 30 25

Cheers! That's similar to what I was going to start aiming for. The RM training tool offers a circuit which is slightly less volume than that, but I was going to aim for more than they recommend to really try and make the training easier if I went for the application process.

Good circuit, but it needs a horizontal pulling exercise for balance.

What would you suggest? I was thinking about adding in some seated rows (and other weighted exercises to aid with the fat loss I need to accomplish).

youll lose enough fat from all the cardio, i wouldnt look to gain any bulk at all. you want to be lean and have endurance.

lil bro is 5,10 and about 80kg when he joined, single digits bf, hes about 90kg now but thats from eating everything in sight when hes not on exercise.

Brilliant. Thanks! I'll bear all this in mind. Getting cracking with a clear goal on this over the weekend. Up until now it's been a little mismatched so no real structure to any of my training.

If you have access to a cable or hammer machine them seated rows is fine.
Work those mid traps/rhomboids and make sure your keep your lats flexible and supple.
There are also gironda pull-ups if you are strong enough.

Work on endurance, work on not injuring yourself, feed yourself according to effort, enjoy the phys (there's going to be lots) it should be a lifestyle thing - it will be in unit.

It's a psychological test using the body as the torture instrument, just keep going...

Best of luck!

Aye. Endurance, endurance, endurance. Add to that sort of upper body strength that gives you the ability to haul your own weight (pull-ups, rope climbs, obstacles) and you'll be fine. After that. as said, its phychological. everyone has a limit, and everyone will confont their own at some point during training. At that point it's all in your own head.

Wouldnt work with the army he says. Their is no prestige, it's just egostistical fking wkers in different hats thinking they are better.
I remember when 42 commando came to ballykinler getting taught how to protect boats in Irish waters, with their green berets on, we fking smashed them 1 staffords infantry kicked your boys to fk. Big fking green beret boys, big mouths , big egos got kicked to fk.. Prestige my fking arse, bunch of salty boots sailor raping ass wipes....

I remember when 2 para turned up as well , well up for a fight with 1 staffords after heariing we had had smashed 42 , they were well up it.

Anyway,it doesn't matter whose beret is better or how fit you are.
Ask yourself this question in the mirror.
Can you willingly kill another man/woman ?
Because that's the bottom line of it all.

^^^^ Haha! What an utter toilet! What did you 'smash' us and the Paras on? Ability to remain unwashed for a whole tour? Ability to spin st dits to your civvy mates?

I did 10 years in the Marines (left in 2008). My advice is to enrole in a circuit training program at your local gym as well as fitting in some 'body pump' sessions once or twice a week. Running to a decent level is obviously a requirement but core strength and muscle stamina are very well tested during training. Don't be afraid to put on some excess weight before starting your training (assuming you pass PRMC). Many turn up too lean and burn out by the time they get to the commando phase. A guy i joined up with was a bit of a lard ass and we all thought he'd fail early on. He did struggle through the gym phase and on long runs, but he stuck with it and by mid way through he was gaining muscle and shedding weight making him ideally suited to the next phase where you get loaded up with fighing order and other enjoyable items. He passed as one of the strongest in the troop and went on to join SFSG where i think he has remianed as senior member of what is a very clicky and cut-throat unit.

How's the head this morning panda?

Guess I should elaborate on my reasons why I wouldn't join the army. The main on is the divide between the officers/seniors and the lower ranks. This also includes the way the lower ranks are treated and spoken too. In the corps you get treated like an adult straight from training. I've worked and trained at army establishments where the constant bullst from above gets you down so much you can't wait to get back to a bootneck unit.

The marines sometimes tend to have a different work ethic to the army. You work until everything is done then you get thinned out if it is possible. With the army they do 8-4 even if there is nothin to do.

Granted there are advantages to joining the army: promotion seems to be quicker, more branches pay the upper pay scale compared to the marines, LCpl rank is permanent where in the marines you only have it at the unit you are given it, you are able to stay at a given unit longer where the corps moves you every two years, you can be a basic infantry soldier for 22 years instead of having to specialise after a year.

Long time coming reply.
Utter bullst dai with the differing in the ranks, we're all in the same st and got on with it, even at officer level. In training a certain amount of discipline and distance is kept for obvious reasons. Same applies to courses for being promoted.
Once you are done with your course you are back in the same fold again.
Local regiments are being decimated because young lads think if they join the marines or paras they are in some elite force, they aren't. The paras don't even get jump money anymore, well because they don't jump into combat anymore, and haven't done so for fking years.
As for the poster above you, " what did you smash us with ? "
Same old st the regs do it with, the two fists god gave us.
bks to your elitist bullst, at an fob out in north afghan our unit fought and pushed the Taliban way back away from the base and did regular fighting patrols to keep them back.
12 months later taking over from the royal marines, base totally closely surrounded by talis and the handing over officer said it was too dangerous to patrol. We had to do it all again !! Elitist ? Yeah right .
.

If I were you OP I would start by going for RAF/Navy standards which are easiest. Then go Army, then marines.

I'm 18 6ft3, 85-90kg with a bit of a belly on me and I can pass the RAF/Navy. I'd say you really don't need to be worrying about your fitness if you can pass those tests. I know plenty of people who can't even run 1 mile. Anyway just don't throw yourself at the deep end try and build up through the services. Also if you are very fitness conscious don't stop at Marines look at what the SAS or French Foreign Legion want.
Or go RAF/Navy, Marines(navy) then PARA.. If your para fit you can pass anything. wink

Ohhhh ballykinler.. Haha. Where did you go on a night out? The rifles aren't even allowed into the town now.

I'm quite positively sure you didn't smash up the paras. wink
