Just returned from one of these; nowhere near as bad as I expected. 4 day run in was tedious and yesterday and this morning on the Picolax was a hoot! Felt like I was drowning with the amount of water I had to drink but opted for some mild sedation the actual procedure was fine. Found I've got diverticulitis and the specialist removed a polyp which he didn't seem too concerned about. So that's me done for a few years. Waiting to see what he says about the diverticulitis but hopefully just diet.
Pleased to hear you didn't find it too bad. As said elsewhere the preparation is worse than the procedure - certainly my experience. Although the staff obviously can't be certain they do seem to have a pretty fair idea of whether or not a polyp looks like 'trouble'.

Preparation here in NL are obviously slightly different to the UK.

I had to pop a couple of pills this morning called Bisacodyl.
I was allowed a couple of white cracker sort of things with low fat cheese or seedless jam for breakfast and lunch.

At 1600 I have to go "clear liquids only".

At 2000 tonight I take the first packet of Picolax and then the second one at 0930 in the morning, before the procedure at 1330 tomorrow afternoon.

I'll keep you posted on "movements" biggrin

You will have the Mother of ALL movements a great number of times
You will not beleive how much "Stuff" is up there.
You will have a sore A**e

I also had an enama. NOw that isn't pleasant. Nurse squirts it up, tells you to hold it for a count of 100 and makes hasty exit.
You wouldn't beleive how quickly you can count to 100. Good job the bog was next to the bed or I'd be posting on the Phantom poo thread!

The proceedure is quite interesting though as others have said. I've had a few over the years. Last one I was asked if I wanted to watch, " wouldn't miss this for the world". It's not every day you get to see your own A**e is it? Also didn't realise how hairy my starfish was!

biggrin Cheers fellas.

The pills have had an effect - but of course I still have the "volcano" moment to come with the Picolax

Sadly no nappy rash cream (I think I have some Preparation H somewhere . . . ) but moist balsam toilet tissues already purchased from an earlier tip biggrin

Go and get some now! Honestly, everyone told me about the sore bum but with some Sudocrem I didn't experience this at all.

I was offered sedation but was told I couldn't drive for 24 hours and had just bought a new Elise, so went for it without. Not very pleasant, but doable - with sedation it would be a doddle.

Well since starting this thread I am still waiting for the date for mine!

Couple of months wait they said.

Suppose that is nothing now after waiting 6 months to see the specialist in the first place!

Just back from the hospital now and can honestly say that the procedure itself was not too unpleasant. The pumping of air was a little painful higher up the colon. And watching on the screen was very interesting.

They found a polyp which has been removed - it looked ok but they was to check the "mucus membrane" (I don't know the correct term in English) for any bacteria.

I get the results a week on Monday.

Definitely the preparation was the worst bit of the process. The effects after the second packet of picolax were more "dramatic" than the first.

And my arse is now red raw - so nappy rash cream before the event I highly recommend.

Thanks for the tips though all.

Good new. I also had a polyp removed. Was also told I had piles.
It's not so bad it? Apart from the Picolax smile

Oh and the indignity of baring your arse to a complete stranger.

I came out of the changing room and announced to those waiting that "hey, I've got piles"
The Nurse responded with "Shut up. they will all be wanting them!"

Happy days.

The "Colonoscopy" is always a great story to tell at a party. I usually start just as food is being served.

Hope the results aren't anything worth worrying about and I'm sure they aren't.

RichB,
Hope they get that sorted PDQ.
Mrs DWS was about 2 hours from dying with that. She ended up with a stoma for 18 months. There were other complications as well so hope you get yours sorted soon without any complications. It was a long night I spent sleeping on a hospital floor to see if she got through it I can tell you.

Hope all will be well.

I've had two sigmoid-oscopies and a colonoscopy. For the former, it was the squeezy bottle of fairy liquid, then count 100 in the starting gate before heading bog-wards to explode. The C/scopy involved Picolax. How does that stuff make you feel?...

The actual scoping wasn't too bad. I had sedation, which wasn't really necessary and, apart from being jet propelled for a while, it was OK. I soon became accustomed to the feeling of an anaconda exploring my tubes.

The oddest bit was the biopsies. On screen, I could see the scope develop little jaws. These seized a piece of colon wall and...rrrippp! Owwww? No, it just looked as though it should hurt.

I'd had overproduction of poo, plus that afterburner feeling after having anything remotely spicy. The diagnosis was indeterminate colitis. It settled with medication - mesalazine.

I found the biopsies a bizarre experience too. There I am lying on the bed, pretty spaced out on the gas watching the screen. Next thing the claws start sliding forwards from the screen like some kind of robot alien thing in a film! Not what you want to see!

I'm a diverticular sufferer too. Had this experience: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=8&a...

Colonoscopy followed later, wasn't fun. I've also Addisons which means my normal oral drugs had to be injected instead.
I used Drapolene to mitigate the sore bum. My prep. was Kleen Prep rather than Picolax. Tastes foul. Salty vanilla water, yeauch. And so much of it both in & out!
Had to wait ages in the colonoscopy suite. Got really cold in the glamorous backless gown even though I got a blanket. Very nervous. The mild sedative I was given just got me back to feeling normal rather than sedation. Then pow up the bum goes the metal snake. The "we're in" comment from the surgeon wasn't inspiring! Not too bad but the pressure was very painful.

The afterwards cup of tea and biscuit didn't half taste good though smile

regards,
Jet

I've yet to hear back from the specialist, he's waiting for the results of a biopsy on a small polyp he also removed. Is there a treatment for diverticular disease or is it just managing the symptoms?
