I had one about 9 months ago and elected not to be sedated so only minimal LA as required, as I wanted to remain lucid. Lots of people suggested I get sedated but tbh it was a painless procedure and if anything it was quite interesting.
I say that as the specialist doing mine was able to talk to me / explain what he was doing / direct me to look at the monitor / ask questions during the procedure which not only takes your mind off it, but also means you can answer the specialists questions there and then, rather than having to wait for the follow up appointment
If anything the worst part is the fact you cant eat or drink anything for 24 hours before the procedure, except for plain / clear liquids.
A lot of people who tended to suggest sedation were the sort of people that think the NHS owe them a full day in a hospital ward in recovery with a free meal, drink, etc, after the procedure. Whereas without taking any sedation you can be out of the hospital within 30/45 minutes of the procedure being over and get on with the rest of the day (or at least I was)

that's told me. Well this person had a total hip replacement whilst fully awake with no GA or any sedation so where does that put me now?Hoofy said:
Don't ask to go in fully awake. I thought it would be interesting to watch - I felt the entire thing. It was very uncomfortable - you can feel every twist and turn of the camera. On the plus side, I've seen my insides.
Is that a plus side?
First time I had one I was 'introduced' to my 5 cm tumour Is that a plus side?
though to be fair it followed a scan and I already knew it was there, still looked quite horrible, like an alien brain deposited there Of course forgot to mention that my second colonoscopy may have been a lot quicker as only half my colon remains

Had one last year, I thought you had to go for the sedation but was offered gas/air which I went for as you aren't allowed to do a right lot for 24 hours after the sedation. Less than an hour after I was in McDonald's stuffing my face feeling fine.
It was very easy to lose track of what was going on with the gas. I could feel when the camera got to the corners but it wasn't that bad. Just don't do what I did and breathe in so much gas you can't take the thing out of your mouth! It feels really weird when you're breathing loads of it in!
The stomach cleaning stuff beforehand is a bit grim, make sure you're near a toilet at all times! Oh and see what flavour it is. I thought it was flavourless until I tasted it when it turned out to be vanilla flavour. This probably wouldn't have been so bad if the instructions didn't say mix it with squash which I did. Lime and vanilla is disgusting!

Yeah, I forgot about that - i was provided with Picolax - that stuff tasted very nasty when mixed in with cold water - not a nice thing drinking that in small sips as suggested 
Had 3 in the last couple of years - now got a 3yr 'pass'. Phew!
Had gas for all 3 but did have additional sedation injection for most intrusive one. Found it interesting to see 'where the sun don't shine'. Slightly uncomfortable but manageable.
As others have said the worst part is the 24 hr preparation

t lying on your side whilst they blow air up your ass and shove a camera up it.Have had about 5 now. Some with sedation, some without, the only one that gave me any grief afterwards was one done with sedation but by a different Dr from the one who usually does them.
No pain from the procedure itself, as someone said you can feel the camera going around bends.
But as I now only have about 40% of bowel left a much quicker job.
Next one due in October.
