Anyone had surgery to remove a fistula before? Been plagued by abscesses (4 in two years) and been told today I need to have a seaton (sic) operation to remove a fistula. Just wondered if anyone has had the same and if so, should I be bricking it?

Oh dear! How long did it take to heal? With my abscesses I've had them all incised and drained and then packed each day (yowsers!) for 7-21 days. I understand the seaton surgery is more involved and recovery time longer. How long did your recovery take?

At least a month. Make sure it is 100% better before you do any sort of exercise.

Hi OP - sorry to hear of your troubles.

I've been coping with anal fistulas (fistulae?) for many years now. I'm afraid I've pretty much accepted it as something I'll have to live with for the rest of my days.

I lived with one seton for several years and didn't have a flare the whole time.

I flared up last year again and was under the knife again (three times until sorted).

I currently have two setons in place. They're inconvenient (can't wipe properly / have to shower after toilet) and a bit uncomfortable but I'm happy to live with them if they're doing their job and keeping me infection free.

The setons I've had best success with are like fishing line. I did have the softer ones one time but flared.

My two most important bits of advice are as follows.

  • Don't be in a hurry to get your seton(s) removed.
  • Get good at sensing infection coming on (pain / feeling ill) and get to the doc straight away. Alternatively, my GP allows me to keep an AB prescriotion to react quickly.
Don't worry about the surgery, the first few days are never pleasant but you'll get back to normal before you know it - just found this old thread.

BTW - my older brother has had a very similar history to me.

My consultant speaks of a new technique where they fill the fistula void with some sort of silicon paste. To have any chance of success, I have to be 100% infection free though and I'm not there yet (about a twelve months since my last surgery).

I hope you get on ok. Don't hesitate to PM me.

Killtie, thanks for that. I'm waiting to hear from the specialist about the next steps for having this seton. Really not looking forward to it but if it keeps me from the pain of the abscesses, I guess it will be worth it. Thanks for the support. James

Glad to share my experience.

Indeed, setons aren't ideal but they're a blessing when you've suffered the pain for a while.

They're really not too difficult to live with.

Take care and, if you have questions not suitable for posting, don't hesitate to PM. smile

Can't speak for the OP, but by some kind of medical miracle I had an abscess last Christmas, the pain of which I simply can not describe, for six days until the fcensoredr burst in the early hours of New Year's Day. Went to see an eminent consultant, fistula diagnosed, seton procedure the way to go.

Read up on it, procrastinated, delayed, scared as hell. Went back to consultant six months later, the bloody thing had healed by itself, so didn't need the op after all. He'd only seen this twice before; I was somewhat relieved smile

I hope this is what happened to the OP.

This thread brings back memories.

I had a fistula a couple of years back. By far the worst pain I've ever had to endure and like a typical man I didnt get it checked out until I REALLY had to. At this point I couldnt sit, stand or lie without massive pain.

After going to the doctors he referred me for surgery THAT AFTERNOON (might have left it too long afterall).

Post-op I endured the rather undignified act of having it packed for 10 days or so but touch wood I've not had any further issues.

You have my sympathy.

Had an appointment with the specialist last week. I've got to have that seaton thing done. Just waiting for a date. Tad nervous. Just packed in the fags too, so it's all happening!

That's good news for you. No such luck for me. Just waiting for a date to have the seaton done. Can't wait......

Yes, there aren't many people left in South Wales that haven't seen my backside now!! I used to think a dental abscess was the worst pain.....until I started getting these things!!! You're right though, the packing is just as bad as the abscess itself. Bad times.

Sir

I never ever expected to be offering this kind of advice on pistonheads...
I'm in Biotech/ Pharmaceuticals and a year ago I was looking for innovative gastro products... I met some guys who had devised something rather special for what you are experiencing... try here http://www.tigenix.com/ click products and look at CX601... it will be pricey...but you may able to get on a trial.. results were in my view rather good... http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs00384-... it is not yet a product and still in development... but give them a crack (sorry)... or speak to your Physician...

For the record I have no commercial association with this firm whatsover...

Very sorry to hear about what you are experiencing...

Best of luck

A
