I've got a broken (amalgam) filling in the rear most upper molar. The filling is a sizeable one and the dentist states likely to require replacement with crown at some point soon. A white filling may last a bit longer than an amalgam replacement though. However, due to the lack of space and the issue with food build up behind the filling between the poor molar and the wisdom tooth, the dentist has recommended removing the wisdom tooth which will enable better cleaning and obviously easier work on the tooth later on.
The wisdom tooth hasn't caused me any direct issues up to now (ie no pain from that directly although the broken filling hasn't been comfortable!).
I'm not 100% sure about logic of removing a healthy (although of no real use) tooth and keeping a bad one which will still need work done to it.

Thoughts (preferably from dentists!)

Nothing much to add but my primary school headmaster died having a wisdom tooth removed. Good luck.

Least helpful post ever.

I've just had one done, easy peasy. Bit of pain the day after, extraction took no time at all under a local anaesthetic in a local hospital. Annoying hole for a couple of weeks that's now closing up nicely. Take care of the wound, take some time off work a couple of days afterwards to avoid strenuous activity, plenty of paracetamol, you'll be over it in no time.

Cirks, you say it is an upper molar therefore it's an upper wisdom tooth. If this has erupted (and presumably it has) they are a piece of piss to remove. It wouldn't be as much use a a correctly restored molar nearer the front and if there really is a lot of food trapping, for an upper wisdom it's much easier to justify.

On the other hand everything is relative and there should of course be a real indication to have it removed but without looking your mouth and seeing radiographs, no-one could say for sure.

I'm in my 40s and don't have any wisdom teeth.

Does this make me a freak?

Thanks. Off to have it done (although will look at the xray while I'm there) in a couple of hours!

You probably do but they'll still be up in your gums. 2 of mine are, and 2 have just the tips showing as I broke the skin when they gave me gip about 5 years ago. Mum is nearly 75 and hers are still hidden in her gums.

I had my left upper and lower wisdoms out under concious sedation, took about an hour and was very restful. Wasn't particularly happy afterwards but felt a lot better in a couple of days. The worst bit was not blowing my nose or sneezing as the pressure can rupture the skin between the sinus and where the upper wisdom tooth was.

Still glad it was done, was done at Guys Hospital with all the students around though the dental surgeon was not a student. Very attractive lady and did comment my blood pressure was raised :-)

Should really have given update. Was done - no problem (other than the filling in the molar in front of it broke again so had to be repaired) or pain at all. Nice big curve on the tooth itself which made it a bit tougher to get out but was fine in the end.

Thanks for the input.

Found out today, that I need one of my lower wisdom teeth taken out. Park of it broke off last week when I was eating my tea, and after an emergency apt today, dentist basically said its nackered and has to come out.

I guess, as its all the way through, and has been for about 10 years or so, it should be fairly straight forward. Not looking forward to it though, but for the best I spose.

I have no wisdom teeth in my gums on x-Ray and two baby teeth still and about to hit 30. Double freak points.
