Between the ages of 15-21 I was incredibly fit and played sports to a high level.

For the last 10 years for various reasons which are mainly due to my own doing I've lost that. I've had a drinking problem, not a dribbling alcoholic but I have gone through a period where I drank 2/3 bottles of wine a night. Every night. I was spending money on alcohol rather than decent food. Around 2 years ago I did quit drinking with a lot of help, it was hard. Recently I got a new job, and I've started drinking (not as heavily as before).

I also used to be a heavy smoker. I was smoking 40 a day up until around 3 months ago when I took up e-digs. I've had one cig in the last 3 months more to see how I felt about it. However I didn't like it and am not convinced I will not go back to normal cigs.

I've also noted that my lack of exercise and unhealthy living over the last 5/6 years have lead for me to pile fat on. I'm not a typical fatty as I've got quite a solid frame anyway, but I have lost all my definition and my chin is not looking how I want it to. I've got into an unhealthy habit of eating takeaways 3/4 times a week.

Now I want to quit it all. The e-cigs, the drinking again and cut out all unhealthy food including caffeine. My plan was to do a stoptober max.

However I am a little concerned about how I will act for the first couple of weeks of this. I know from experience I will not sleep and won't be able to concentrate and will be prone to losing my temper. I wanted to counter this with loads of running and cycling.

What I really wanted to know is, what are my chances of my Doctor giving me a note for a couple of weeks. I know it's not a medical thing maybe. But I do know that my overall health will be improved if I can do this. Do you guys feel this is unreasonable to ask for a doctor? One issue is, I'm quite new to my job - and it won't look good calling in and saying that I need time off so I can be more healthy.

Oh - and feel free to rip me and take the piss. I'm actually considering doing me own health diary including photos over a few month, so I'm definitely turning into a bit of a girl.

I admire you for wanting to turn things around but would hope this doesn't qualify you for a sick note

Best of luck PS you'll do it no problem. Tell your Boss you've been having trouble sleeping and he'll be ok for a day or two and by then you'll be going to gym every day and in a good routine. I'm doing the same thing

"Why?"
"Well, I've decided to be healthy. So healthy, that there'll be a transitional period; a transformation. A length of time where I'll not know who I am, what I'm doing. It'll be a journey into the unknown, a dangerous one. A perilless one. A journey of self discovery, a...

And back to previous habits with a vengeance in November.

Try to just quit smoking first. If you quit everything, you're going to kill someone. You've seen Falling Down? That's because he quit smoking, junk food and booze all at once.

This is good advice. Take it steady for a lot better chance of success.

OP take a bloody holiday that's what they're there for. Getting signed off for work is not ethical and if you're truly worried about confidentiality this will absolutely not help, as you have to tell your employer, and your new colleagues will start asking where you have been.

I think he'd do better sticking with real science rather than hocus pocus personally. Here's one of hundreds of websites debunking the China study;

Admirable aims!

First off, rebrand your intent. Detox is a myth. Your renal system works 100%, 100% of the time at removing toxins from your body. If it didn't, you'd be in hospital or six foot under. Nothing that you can buy or do improves its efficiency. The challenge comes from the removal of the consumption of certain toxins that your body has grown used to and thus 'crave'.

Having been in a similar though less profound situation, as you, I would recommend focusing in regaining your fitness. Don't simply join a gym, sign up to a programme, buy a DVD fitness programme...something that requires you to commit time to on a regular basis. This has the benefit of taking your mind off things on a regular basis and thus; re-sets your body's needs and the physical act of getting fitter and healthier compounds to the point where your body can 'crave' fitness and health and this naturally dispel the need for the nasties.

It will take about three months.

Stick with it and good luck.

Ha!

All of this.

It'll take you months to turn your health around. If you're dedicated.

I read enough of the China study to know not to waste any further time with it.

I'm curious what you mean by "read the mail", the link I post is just a well thought out response. There's literally hundreds of similar ones. There's also masses of well established scientific truths which must first be rejected without reason before you can accept the books findings. Which in itself should tell you something.

The author is not, by any measure, a scientist.

I was telling a research nurse a few months ago how neither detox nor anti-oxidants were actually a real thing (in the way they are marketed).

The mind boggles.

In all fairness to her, after I told her references she was more than happy to adjust her position, so clearly she was a scientist deep down.

so who funds westonaprice? yes you can google millions of responses but ask yourself for all our advances why is western health in such a dire position at the mo? which scientific proofs do you refer to?

what do you term a scientist then? this guy has been researching for 30 odd years based on funding from peer reviewed papers?

Western health is in the toilet because our culture extols overconsumption. The food industry is fattening us all up for Soylent Green.
