Got to 40 weeks on the 6th, went in on the 7th to be induced.
Took ages; Henry was born on the 9th at 3.44a.m. 7lb7oz, 21.5".
At about 8 a.m., the nurse decided he was struggling to maintain his temperature, so took him off us to put him on the warmer.
At about 11a.m. we were roused from sleep by the NICU on call doctor wanting to do a spinal tap.
As you can imagine, this wasn't overly expected or pleasant. So, after some dialogue, it was explained that they thought he had an infection and were putting him on a course of antibiotics. They wanted the LP to check for meningitis.
We agreed, obviously. Interestingly, the treatment is nearly identical, except in dose.
All the tests proved negative, so they had no idea what he picked up, but he started improving after about 12 hours. The course is 7 days worth. After a day or so, he started getting jaundiced.
Then IV one started leaking, so ended up with one in his head. A few days later, this too started leaking - yep, another one in his head. A few hours before his last dose...yes, another leak. And another one in his head. Poor guy.
In the meantime, the jaundice never got bad enough to need treatment (though we did get to see a truly excellent harlequin sign on him, which was interesting, given his colour at the time), but they decided on day seven that he was having difficulty breathing on his own.
Honestly, you couldn't make this up.
Not as bad as you might think, this being Colorado - 90% of the babies in the NICU get sent home on oxygen - and the doctors think that if they tested all the newborns outside the NICU, 90% of them would go home on O2 as well.
Anyway, they were ok letting him home on oxygen (lowest possible level), so we've been home for 5 days with him now.
His need for oxygen is minor at best - his pulse ox drops slightly too low when sleeping and digesting, so we should be done with it in a couple of weeks, hopefully.
The need for O2 is actually a liability - the evening of the day we got him home, he starts crying inconsolably. It took a good 15 minutes, after we called everyone possible, for me to work through everything I could think of, to find he'd spat up, sneezed, and between the nose piece and the snot, blocked his nose, so was chocking and coughing out everything he could to try to clear it. He's done it a few times since then; but now we know, it's not a great worry.

Got four of them already!
After the first day, when it was obvious he was improving, it was just tedious more than anything else.
That first day though, it was nasty, I don't mind telling you.
The jaundice was a blow, but it was never that bad.
I was quite, quite, annoyed at the oxygen, as I knew what a colossal pain it would be, and rightly so.
I suspect he's fine now, but they have to do a test to check his o2 levels, before they'll take him off.

Glad to hear the little guy is getting better.
MrsG is at 31wks, she's starting to worry and I'm getting excited now. I'm being dragged off to the baby show on Sunday to look at different types of bottle, car seats etc. (Not so exciting!)
She's managed to convince herself babyG will be early as well, so I foresee days/weeks of frustration if/when he isn't.

Our little one has been in and out of hospital since he was born, been absolutely terrifying, was rushed in on an ambulance yesterday with a reflux issues. Not nice at all. On new meds now seems to be a lot better.
On a separate note if anyone's Mrs are late and getting impatient Clary Sage Oil will do the trick, my wife was late used this and had contractions with an hour lol.

Due date was Saturday.
Time is ticking. Not nervous at becoming a dad, nervous about the birthing aspect though..
Good luck to all the new dads in this thread!
Good luck to you too! Had a bit of a scare over the last 24hrs as very little movement from BabyG so were in hospital this morning. All well though thankfully.Time is ticking. Not nervous at becoming a dad, nervous about the birthing aspect though..

All doing well chaps. Thanks for the kind words..
I don't think anything can prepare you for your first. Crazy.
The whole labour and birth was a tough slog. I found it gut wrenching and really hard work at times.... And I had the easy job of "supporting".
Still. Mum and baby are all fine so that's all what matters.
Not long left for any new 2015 parents...

Hello Ladies and Gents
Last Sunday I became a proud parent
Samuel James was born at 5.34 am at 4pounds 6 ounces
He was 6 weeks early hence his light wieght
We knew he would be early as partners waters broke at 30 weeks .
Partner when into labour on Saturday afternoon ad we went in to Aberdeen maternity hospital to confirm it was labour , yeah it was so decide to let it go and get ready for birth
Then Consultant comes in and tells us that neo natal in Aberdeen is full and will be transferred to Edinburgh ! Panic ,
So shot home made sure dog was fed watered n peed then threw some stuff in a bag and fired back in to hospital
Gets back in to room .
Change of plan , going to Kirkcaldy now as Edinburgh is full !
Leaves Aberdeen at 10pm whilst arranging doggy care .
Gets to Kirkcaldy just after mid night to find the hospital was closed !
After discussion with ambulance crew we found the main hospital and get checked in there , turns out the forth place hospital had been closed since 2012
Anyway restarted labour fully and 5 hours later baby Sam was born
He is doing well in the neo natal unit but we can't get back to Aberdeen as it is still full .
Now they are threatening to throw my partner out of her room as she has been discharged and force her to take a B and B
I had to go back to work in Aberdeen but am heading down tommorow night and will do my upmost to remain calm but there is a fair chance that won't work
