I have been suffering from lower back pain for a few years now.
I have started seeing an osteopath, I have tried chiro with no luck. My first appointment was a quick questionnaire, no problems there, then it was examination time. I was told to bend forward whilst he pressed his hands on each side of my back travelling upwards.
He then grabbed his spine model and said "I believe that your spine movement is restricted below. We will do a treatment now". He done lots of popping and cracking etc. had a dull ache for a few days after and now feel no improvement.
Early days I can accept, he advised at least 3 treatments close together.

2nd appointment today, again touch your toes etc he did the same again with his thumbs and said "do you frequently go to the toilet often" "yes I drink plenty of water" "it seems to be a kidney problem so we will do some kidney work"
I can only describe it as a massage of the intestines, followed by the usual neck massage and thumbs under the back of my skull. Not comfortable and I feel no different except £45 lighter for 25 mins work.

To me this seems quackers. Is this normal, am I expecting too much? A miracle?

Should I 1. See a different therapist at a different practice? 2. Accept that I'm wasting my time and carry on with nhs Physio, self massage and stretches?

You need a physiotherapist at your local hospital, get your doctor to refer you.

I do, the woman I'm seeing has been good but I suppose I'm looking more for an instant relief

That doesn't sound right at all. I see a guy who is brilliant. But I would suggest you get a referral and ask for an MRI scan plus X-rays before any more work is done on you.

I always have a giggle when I hear what bad osteopaths tell their patients.

"I'm just going to realign the bones now"
"I can push your slipped disc back in"

"I'm just going to do some kidney work"

I'm going to give him one last go and if he is a quack then I'll walk away lighter but would know then that I'm wasting my time. I just didn't understand the kidney work as it was like a diagnosis.

You can get good and bad Physios too! Some Osteos are worth their weight in Gold, some are not.

you need to get to a doctor before u have more work done. The MRI can tell whether u have a worn disc or not. That is common in the L4, L5 Region of the spine. If u have that no Osteo can put it right. All they can do is manage it to take some of the pressure off the nerves. My consultant suggested a spinal injection but I declined preferring to manage it. Personally I found keeping fit, ie walking, sitting properly, swimming has really helped. Avoid heavy lifting. But u need to see a doctor, get a scan to see what is going on.

I found a physio much better.
He explained to me how the spine and muscles work and showed me some exercises, the results have been very good.

I've had a scan which shown minimal dis bulge between l4 & l5 which is quite normal. May try private Physio as some have suggested and keep with NHS Physio along with my daily routine and just manage it.

Same for me - i tried Chiropractor and acupuncture and a bit of massage. Finally got a referral to an NHS physio who has recommended daily stretches for my lower back pain and said, kind of, that a lot of the pain is mental, as in expecting to feel pain when you move in certain ways so it kind of becomes a self fulfilling prophecy... kind of - she also recommended me to watch a guy called Lorimer Moseley on youtube. I did and frustratingly, felt a lot better!!!! Madness
