Asking on behalf of my father in law who had a knee replacement about 16 years ago and another about 2 years ago. It had to be a full 2nd replacement as the parts were no longer available for the 1st one. He suffers a lot of pain and discomfort that makes walking difficult.

He has suffered a number of problems with the second replacement and would like to seek a second opinion to guide him as to the best next steps - which may be "nothing", "more physio and focused exercises" or further surgery - I don't know.

Can anyone recommend a good specialist in London / Midlands / North of England that has good knowledge of arthroplasty?

Can you narrow those locations down a bit. I can recommend arthroplasty surgeons based usually on city, and of course do my own up here.

Nottingham / Leeds / York or across to Birmingham would all be possible; he can and is willing to travel.

Excellent. The Leeds unit is where I trained and I know the guys well.

The chaps to search out and see are David MacDonald or Mark Emerton, both based in Leeds in the NHS and privately.

They are simply at the top of their game and I would happily let either of them operate on me. Decades of experience in revision knee replacement. I used to do a weekly specialist meeting with them and others where we talked over difficult cases.

Be quick with Dave MacDonald though, I heard last week he's retiring from the NHS to go 100% private.

Can't speak for Nottingham or Birmingham, and out of York Tony Maury and Nick Carrington are great surgeons.

Professor Haddad in London did a knee replacement for Brian May from Queen.

One would imagine he's rather good!
