If I bonk while exercising I'll swallow a few tablespoons of sugar straight from the jar. It's nowhere near as bad as a supposedly *healthy* snack bar.
Guess that depends on your goals. If I were aiming to lose weight I wouldn't eat calories to boost energy levels. I'd just soldier on through with perhaps a sip of water.I've lost almost three stone thanks to MFP even accounting for my occasional sugar binges
I just want to say thanks to all those that have contributed and for the recommendation of myfitnesspal whilst this is the unhealthiest time of year and I chose to enjoy it I've got into a good habit of logging my eating habits and set it up with my iPhone's inbuilt pedometer and strata. So here's to a healthy new year.
I have found MFP invaluable for keeping an eye on my daily intake.
The only problem with it is that it does not calculate the calories used when resistance/weight training, only cardio.
I think I lost so much so quickly because I mainly stuck to the 1200 calories per day, but still trained 5 days a week, so probably translated to 800 calories per day max. (400 cals used when training?)
For food, I don't think you can go far wrong with plenty of greens and white meat.

I'm impressed that you're logging through the Christmas season! How you will log tonight when you can barely hold your phone I have no idea, though.
I was logging more to get into the habit but was not adding all the snacks. And not worried that it was over on the odd day. As I've stopped drinking Ill treat myself to an ale or 2 tonight as I got some from the grandparents for Christmas. A friend is trying to get me to the pub but I think not getting drunk for 3-4 months combined with smoking a month may push me to have a smoke so I'm staying in, might treat myself to a chip shop dinner as haven't had one in 4-5 months. Can anyone recommend a good app that will track calories burnt for say walking? I use MFP and the health app but not sure what to link it to record walking which me and the missus do quite a bit (25k in the last 2 days for example). Ideally something passive like the health app itself would be good so I don't have to have an app open when we go out.
At the moment I'm sticking to my calories on MFP but not taking into account walking 6-7 miles each day as I don't know how to calculate / record that!

I lost 3 stone in 3 months.... from 15 1/2 stone to 12 1/2.
Main thing was cutting out bread and eating fruit.
Nobody ever got fat eating fruit, so if you're hungry eat as much fruit as you like.
They still contain calories, especially bananas which are great natural snacks for eating before sports. A large banana (let's face it - who eats small bananas?) contains around 150 kcals - about the same as a packet of crisps.Main thing was cutting out bread and eating fruit.

That said, if you ate a lot of bread (100-150 kcals per slice so easily 600 kcals in a portable meal without any filling!) and cut that out then ate an apple and a banana plus a salad, you're gonna save on your calorie budget.

Quite. It's the best fast food there is. I've used fruit a lot as well.Main thing was cutting out bread and eating fruit.

Choosing ones with most fibre in help fill you up.

Thank you, that makes a lot of sense big breakfast small dinner.
"There is always a well-known solution to a human problem - neat, plausible, and wrong.". Mencken. The human body is quite complex. It is not a simple lever, or a bomb calorimiter. It matters very little what time of day you eat. Calories in vs. calories burned is not wrong but it is a massive simplification; you can read the linked thread, or google Eades, or Taubes, for more.

If your 7% body fat, i take it your what most people call skinny, and not ripped.
You're confusing BMI and Bodyfat%.You can be heavy, very muscular and have 5% bodyfat. In that state, you'll probably be entering bodybuilding competitions.

I cannot see any mention of a plausible mechanism for this effect, and the advice given at the end is junk. Still, believe as you like.I've loosely followed the 16/8 fasting regime for over a year. I haven't stuck religiously to the window but I do tend to eat after 12. Preferably at 2ish. So have breakfast in the afternoon and then have a massive dinner at night.
It's worked out brilliantly for me. I don't see myself changing, unless I have a need to pile on pounds.

I work offshore, doing four or five week trips. Sometimes I work 12am -12pm, sometimes the other way round.
Something I've realised is that eating three meals a day is totally unnecessary, and I'm never 'hungry' when breakfast comes around.
If I'm on the midday to midnight shift I eat my bowl of muesli and yoghurt at about 10am and then eat again at 6pm. I then have a snack about 10pm, then off to bed at 1am without eating again.
Last time offshore I lost 7kg in a four week trip doing this. I was a porky 97kg when I left home, and when I got back there I was 90kg.
Cutting out the little nibbles, cakes, ice cream, just a bit here, a bit there, as it soon adds up to a whole extra meal.
The midnight to midday shift is a different matter, I can't seem to get into the groove and keep the eating down.
I find it strange that some guys I work with eat literally twice as much food as I do, but don't seem to put any weight one. Three full meals a day, with soup, with deserts, with snacks etc. How does that work???
I also work out, run, walk, a few weights, rowing machine, try to do an hour most days when offshore. I ought to carry it on when I'm home, but it never happens.

It was a peer reviewed study that was published in Obesity a while back. Nothing wrong with the science. A couple of comments were made regarding sample size (only 90 odd people) and duration (12wks). Like Keynes, I'm always happy to change my opinion should the facts change.Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
