Seated isolates the soleus, which is the big flat muscle that sits underneath. It's the more important one if you are training for aesthetics because the insertion point is much closer to the ankle

I have a plate loaded seated calf machine which if you include the leverage multiplier is about 3x with what i've got on it currently
Cheers. I see. smile

Standing calf raise machines (pads on shoulders) put unnecessary pressure on the lower back. I use a seated leg press machine as well as a plated Smith Machine (seated on a bench). A successful amateur bodybuilder at my gym who had frankly outrageous calves suggested to me to do multiple sets of 30 reps and not to go too heavy, and this was the interesting bit, to finish the last rep of each set on a contraction (ie fully flexed)!

ETA - Just been reading this. Looks interesting and may give it a go next calves session!

Another stupid question - why would the pads put too much pressure on the back compared to, say, farmer's walks?

Come on Dougal Hoofy wink we're talking about loading and isolating the calves only. A standing calf raise machine puts severe load through the lower back, and could easily exacerbate any pre-existing lower back issues. when others forms of calf isolation negate that.

That's what I was thinking when I hit submit.

But I still don't get why it makes any difference.

Hang on, my question is pads vs farmer's walks. You've ignored that question, haven't you?

Farmers walks are the worst thing for people with dodgy backs back due to hip and spinal rotation under compression.

Do you think that using trap bars makes that type of lift any less bad?

Pah, just lift the heavy thing already!

Put it down and do it again! biggrin

I've dropped weight and upped the volume recently which is allowing some nice linear gains again.

3x5 deadlifts with 140kg this week. My previous max is 170kg and I SUCK at rep work for deadlifts, so hoping for good things in a few weeks.

5x5 with 75kg Bench followed by 3x3 Paused with 85kg and 5x5 squats with 110kg which are still feeling easy even with another 5kg on each week.
