I have been waking up the last 3 or 4 nights with chest discomfort.
The pain is like a random pulse deep in my left side.
I had the same a couple of nights last week and took an indigestion tablet which seemed to work the first night but not the second.
Over the years I've had random chest pains which I've put down to indigestion and they have gone away.
I had an ECG/EKG last year while in the US and was all clear.
I think that my Cholesterol is up at the moment but I'm not feeling anything during the day ?
I'm in Germany now and planning for India next week then on to the US.
Should I be concerned or head to an Apotheke for some Rennies ?
I found this on tinternet,
Pain that is sharp and brief – stabbing pain that lasts a few seconds is not from the heart. - See more at: http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/pr...
But, this is a stabbing pain that lasts for one or two hours.

When you call my GP surgery, the very first thing, before you get any options, is a recorded message saying "If you have chest pain, shortness of breath, or severe bleeding, please hang up and call 999 immediately".
Really. If you want to check that, call 01732 870212.
But call the ambulance/get someone to take you to hospital first.

I appreciate the 'get yourself to Hospital' no nonsense approach and am going to go later today.
I called my GP and the receptionist asked me to call back on Monday, so not quite the same.
Cheers,
Tony.
I have had, and ignored, a sharp stabbing pain in my chest in the past. Lasted a few days on a few occasions.
The last time, in December, it lasted a few days as before. But once it stopped, I coughed up some blood. This time I went straight to the doctor and he sent me straight to A&E.
It was a pulmonary embolism. i.e. a blood clot. Bloody (pardon the pun) scary, considering what could have happened, and I'm now on Warfarin for the forseeable future.
I'm not suggesting you have this, but you do need to get it checked sooner rather than later.

Glad things have gone OK for you and good luck for the future.
woke up on monday morning feeling like i had been shot in the sternum. presumed i had slept funny, but have had a cough for two weeks. saw this post and took advice and managed to get an appointment at the g.p. who sent me straight to the hospital. he diagnosed minor pneumonia due to other symptoms too. chest xray showed i have also broken 2 oposing ribs due to violent coughing. bloody hurts and feel like crap. im not one for running to the quacks at the slightest bit of bother but when i said chest pain they got me sorted out very sharpish. now strapped up and on a course of painkiller and antibiotics. gonna live though. hope the O.P. gets sorted. have to say the staff at chapel allerton hospital were brilliant too.
Try the online symptom checker: click. Another link just in case: click.
It'll likely advise you to call 999 - I guess the operator will determine whether an emergency ambulance or GP appointment is appropriate.
I recently had a minor scare with chest and arm pain which after ECG and blood test turned out to be muscular anyway. Better to be safe than sorry though.
