From what you say, you cook from scratch which is no bad thing but how much and often are you eating? You also mention having a couple of glasses or three of wine, that alone will contribute to the weight gain. I didn't suggest it was an ideal weight. But it's a target weight that I'd like to hit. I think I was about 12 stone when I was at Uni, so 76kg. I'd love to get back to that level. In addition of course I want to gain fitness, not just end up like a stick with a belly.
I'm 5' 11 and 81Kg, having dropped from 90Kg, and still have a gut I need to shift, albeit not as big as before. My target weight with a flattish stomach is low 70Kgs.

I meant where body fat is likely to deposit.
My father has a slight pot belly and moobs. Without training I'm the same.
Weight training as well as a decent diet is the best way to regain former glory. Added muscle fills in the right places as the fat disappears. We're not talking Arnie or Franco Columbo type body building. hehe

Yep, if you just focus on weight loss, you'll always have flappy skin around the tum area. Skin is like that. It'll finally disappear when you're on the verge of being diagnosed with anorexia and your family are worried sick about your mental health. wink

OTOH, filling the flappy skin with muscle looks healthier and looks better. smile

My Dads like a rake and I don't have an arse like a woman, but I don't need to guess where I put it on - I know!
So really as you and Goofy say, you've just got to fill the skin with something - food or muscle....

As Doofy says ya just need to do a bit of liftin, bodyweight is a good place to start, crunches, press-ups, planks, concentrate on core, 3rd world squats, their are loads of combinations of these, have a look on youtube, lots of good videos, look for the ones with people who are speaking sense, bit of yoga too, their are some good yoga apps, and some light stretching to loosen yourself up.

You don't need expensive equipment or a gym membership to get started. smile

Big congrats. I have gone from being even heavier to still slightly above 90kg's. I am aiming for 80-85kg also. I am more concerned that my bf is at decent levels than being obsessed with absolute weight. I am wearing jeans I have not wore since 2006/7, which is nice.

Did you work very hard at diet and training? I have been very active (cycling to work, walking a lot, playing sports) but diet has a lot of room for improvement. I have cut out booze for the last 8 weeks also and plan to keep booze free until I am where I want to be.

Who thinks it's possible to be 10-12% body fat and drink alcohol weekly?

I ask because I was 14% over the summer (measured professionally, with callipers) - looked pretty good though I say so myself. I drank every weekend. I am intrigued, though, whether I can go lower and still have a few beers at the weekend.

I'm sure it's possible, but much more difficult. It's not just the extra empty calories; I saw somewhere alcohol inhibits fat burning or something.

About that.

But the problem with alcohol is the way the body processes it. It doesn't convert it to energy as easily as other foods / liquids and it's more likely to be stored as fat. Don't ask me the biology, I cannot remember.

Someone will know this better than me...

What would happen if I ate nothing but rubbish: crisps, cheese, breads, pasta but under 2000 calories a day along with 500-1000 calories of activity per day? Would I achieve low bf % eventually since I would have a constant calorie defecit?

My guess is that you wouldn't feel too good, and perhaps have terrible mood swings...

I also believe that would be a consequence!
What I was getting at is a discussion I had with a colleague. He has read many many health books and muscle building books and I absolutely agree with the concept of the correct amount of protein / carbs / fat is required for being an athlete / being in optimum shape. I just don't let it take over my life and think it's pointless unless I am actually an athlete. i.e. I don't worry about eating bread after a certain time or worry that my protein consumed is under 1g for each kg of bodyweight for a week/day. As long as one is active and doesn't consume a lot of booze/sugar/junk food, you're >90% of the way there.

And as far as I am aware, if you were to consume 2000 calories per day and that consisted of 2 pints and that day included 500 calories burned cycling and 250 calories burned walking, you would most likely lose weight....calorie deficit is what it all boils down as far as I am aware.
