Went in to have acl reconstruction on Thursday, aside from icing and keeping the leg up is there anything that can be done to ease the pain/discomfort. The initial bend after keeping the leg straight delivers a pain blast that I haven't experienced before

for me, there was 2 or 3 days of pretty bad pain and stiffness, but after a week the pain was quite small, and i was putting weight on it within 2 weeks. think you might just have to deal with it for a few days, it gets better quickly

More exercise. Keep it moving and stop it getting stiff. Lots of ice. Don't be manly and try to cut them down keep taking them so you can keep moving your knee.

I've had ACL, PCL and MCL reconstructed and am cycling on a turbo trainer for short bursts throughout the day. It takes braveness to get on each time because it's incredibly painful BUT it helps. Hugely.
