Im 39 and used to Powerlift when I was younger. Ive installed a small Gym at work and have been training 3 times a week for nearly 2 yrs now. Its a great way to fill a lunch hour.

I brought most of it on eBay, preloved and Gumtree you can get some great bargains.

Do it, you wont regret it.

You could start with a TRX system and focus on body weight for a few months. I know they're expensive for some strapping, but they are worth it. I use them with my athletes all the time.

They are indeed very good. You do need a sufficiently strong attachment point though!

Have booked tomorrow off to get it set up, go to the tip with the rubbish its displaced.

Will get some photos when its installed.

Shed floor should be ok as it is fairly thick floorboards with carpet over, which in turn is on timber bearers on top of slabs, sand and hardcore, will place it so the weight is over the bearers, should be ok but will keep my eyes open for any issues, it wotn be seeign that much weight (apart from me) to start with.

I'm just getting into lifting as part of an overall excercise routine but I live in a flat without a shed for a personal gym. I joined our new local for £10 a month 4 weeks before it opened and the deal is fixed for a year. These new budget gyms are incredibly good value for money and have the best, new equipment that I've seen anywhere. I saw my PT for the first time yesterday and did some 'core" work. My legs are aching after the lunges but I'm really enjoying it

I was more commenting on the core work then complaining about the lunges.

Do you need 5x5? Depends on your goals.

I'm 52 now and have been doing isolated exercises for quite some time. I'm just getting bored now and think I need a change. But also, I'm not interested in having bulky muscle mass.

Goal is therefore now - muscle strength. My arms have become almost too big from curling and I think for my goal, compound would be the way to go.

5x5 is probably more beneficial for you as the compound movements strengthen you all round.

No such thing as an isolation exercise.

God you must be huge smile

Because compound lifts won't make you grow? How d'you figure that? If you do 5x5 you'll still grow - just not as quickly. If you want no growth at all it's 3/4 reps, 3 sets. Straight power training.
You'll still have those horrendously vast arms though. laugh

You know what I mean - bicep curls as an example.

They are for my shirt sleeves wink I just would prefer a little less bulk.

I'm obviously not explaining myself at all biggrin

I've been focussing too much on my upper body and not enough 'all body' so just think that 5x5 would be a better option for me. I want muscle strength, which I understand means muscle size, but would prefer a more 'all round' of muscle fitness/strength rather than certain areas.

Yeah sorry I was just having a laugh.

Hoofy's right - Compound exercises on a 5x5 format will do you fine. It's not optimum for growth, that would be 4x8-12/15, so you won't grow that much at all.

Biceps curls aren't an isolation exercise as the movement employs anterior deltoid and trapezius (and a few others) as synergists - so they get a work out as well.
