Out in the Dominican at the moment, and for the past 12 days, I've had the runs every day.

Tried Immodium and took a blister pack but it didn't work. That was last week. Its not making me feel I'll but I'm sick of going to the toilet on impulse! Dropped to a basic diet and down to only one drink a day (on an all inclusive its killing me!)

Is it worth another go with Loperamide or will it do more harm than good? It'll be a trip to the GP after the weekend if it likely persists.

A couple of immodium instants should do the trick. I'm not a doctor but speaking from experience.

12 days is a long time...you need to make sure you're hydrated as you'll lose a lot of fluids this way.
Sounds like you have picked up some gastric bug, maybe through food. I had similar during a holiday to Egypt a few years ago, but that only lasted 4-5 days! Definitely see a Dr if you don't improve!

5 hours into another course of tablets and all OK so far.... I'm well hydrated at least which stands to replace the lost fluid. Time will tell...

Too much time in the sun all of a sudden? Happened to me in Kenya a few years back. Body just didnt cope with the sudden heat and shut down basically from heat exhaustion - had bottom water for a good week and was out of action for doing anything for most of the time.. Passed out at one point and smashed my side on the side of a chest of drawers in the middle of the night!

The Imodium (loperamide based generally) is NOT a therapeutic, it is a stopper. The fact you still have the trots after a long time means that the bug is still in your gut. Stopping the diarrhoea generally just prolongs the time it's there as it suppresses your body's urge to expel the badness.

I would have gone to a doctor days ago. I suspect that something like ciproflaxin or similar nuclear antibiotic will sort it out.

Good luck though. I had very bad runs and sulphur farts from a nasty bout of giardiasis in Africa and it hung around my gut for the next year!

Oh great! Well where the inmodium failed, the loperamide seems to have at least given me relief! It does slow down the movement of food through the intestine though which in turn allows more water to be absorbed.

But I do think at 12 days I'm probably pissing in the wind and its little more than respite rather than rescue.

See if you can get hold of some apple cider vinegar. A tablespoon in a glass of water several times a day normally does the trick by killing the bacteria which cause diarrhea. Numerous other health benefits too.
It's also a good idea to load up your system with a high quality probiotic before travelling and especially after taking antibiotics.

Interesting

Which bacteria does it kill and by what method?

Cheers

Try a mix of 1 litre water, 6 teaspoons of sugar and half teaspoon of salt.
