What's the average length of your bike rides?
Average length? Around an hour, but that includes commutes and training. Training (when I use energy stuff) is 1-2hrs week nights and 2.5-3 hours weekends. Calories are taken from my PM.

You should be OK. I posted a link from a blog of a fella who kept records of his intake, blood levels, calories expenditure on here. He was a cyclist and still maintained a level of ketosis even though he was consuming sugar/carbs.
If you look you'll find it.
Mint, thanks. I'll keep smashing down the gels while training.

I heard a radio program about diabetes and the number of people on the 'approach road', at 44 years old and over 18 stone I figured that was me marching along that road.

So on 1st April I gave up cakes, sweets, puddings, jam, ice cream, biscuits. In essence I ditched almost all of the processed sugar.

Two months later I have lost a stone. Only another 3 to go.

Well done clap

It has been said that a good diabetic diet is a good diet for everyone.

So how are we all doing? I had a few fallings off the wagon as far the sugar goes but have been back on track for a while now.

Also have given up tea and coffee and, although I was never big drinker, even stopped the odd glass of wine.

The headaches you get after a few days of stopping caffeine speaks volumes IMO.

I think it's an interesting experiment considering how few people in the western world do this.

THe headaches after I gave up caffeine were that bad I had two days off work. Literally could not lift my head off the pillow.

Went cold turkey on all added sugar as well but have now learnt to enjoy as a treat.
A nice cold can of Pepsi once in a while and switched to decaff coffee with almond/soya milk. Lovely.

Likewise, I don't find it tough to do, but still fall off now and again.

I'm now cycling to work everyday too.

I give up caffeine every so often, I'm due a ban. I use coffee in the mornings during my fast, so it's awkward. I might experimenting with hazelnut coffee.

Have given up Sugar as much as I can, today I have had,

Porridge, Oats and Milk, nothing else

Can of Chicken Soup with half a cooked Chicken Breast added

2 slices of Beef and a handful of Almonds as a mid afternoon snack as the soup wasnt enough.

Bag of unsalted crisps before the gym as was flagging and needed some quick energy, with a fairly strong cup of coffee

2 pitta bread with salad and chicken for tea, with a glass of Red as it is Friday.

Did an hour in the gym

Does that count as sugar free ?

Yeah, the crisps were a burst of carbs to give me some quick energy, the soup seems to be fairly sugar free however,

Not going mad, mainly avoding it in the form of cakes, biscuits or anything like that, trying not to add it.

I find that if I eat nuts and meat, you have this lull before you get any energy from it, I think we tend to want that instant glucose hit.

I wouldn't use MFP for the macros and micros. They're entered by users so not accurate plus vary according to country and over time.

The last time I bothered to look, very soup brand save one had added sugar as an ingredient in their soups. The one that didn't was a small brand which seemed to have less processed stuff in it, a chunky soup, it was lovely. I had one the other day, forget the brand but it was one of those plastic tubb ones, kale and garlic or something, rather nice and tasted in my opinion all the better for it, not that I am adverse to a sugary heinx tomato soup, but it's nice to have different things.

This is the frustrating part for me, I can't seem to get off the sugar and stay off.

Today is day 2 off the sugar, I feel better already. It seems so massively beneficial, but still impossible to maintain.

I bloody love sugar but have cut it down drastically, it is so fundamental to a lot of peoples diets though and why they end up on the blood sugar rollercoaster of highs and lows that makes you eat and makes you fat.

I have not cut it out completely, still eat dark chocolate, one square after dinner usually.

Have ditched breakfast most days, just had a three egg Omelette with cheese and ham, no bread, ok a smidge of ketchup which has sugar in but getting less and less.

The wife and I had a night watching a film and gorged on the kids leftover retro sweeties, it is like bloody crack and left us feeling dreadful.

All the stuff people use that they think makes life better, that they enjoy is generally what is making them feel crap all the time, booze and sugar with a side of over eating, I was 18 stone, I feel so much better now at 15 and a half, thing is I was putting this down to age, it isnt, it is being fat and having a crap lifestyle, thin and fit people enjoy life more and us fatties are there trying to feel good by gorging on crap and getting pissed all the time which is a self fulfilling prophecy, it is very difficult to break the chain, feel like I am on my way though.

I think we still need the occasional treat, I had Nutella on toast last Thursday and it was magical, but if I have it for breakfast every morning it is dull, but treats have become commonplace in our society, the food is only one part of it though, anticipation and being deprived of something are the factors that make something a treat, not the actual thing itself, can always get more Nutella and more white bread but that enjoyment needs to be earnt and savored and it takes time.

"Less is more" is the best phrase ever coined.

I'm on day one coincidentally, it's crept up on me from none at all, to a little one weekend, a little every weekend, a lot every weekend, a little every night................

Until I noticed last night myself hunting through the cupboards for anything with sugar after my dinner and subsequently scoffing 1/3 of a packet of chocolate Digestives, standing up in the kitchen at the open cupboard.

So, no more, I'm the boss, not the sugary loveliness biggrin

My limited experience suggests that hazelnuts and coffee are not happy bedfellows.Try Lavazza decaf.
