Anyone with experience of these fun little things, particularly those a bit older who have had them long term, or multiples of them? I'm in my 12th year of stones (I'm 33), I've passed several over the years (my last one was a few weeks back, 3mm, didn't even notice!) and found out yesterday I've got another two in my left kidney 'on the way' at some point in the future.

I've had several fairly serious infections, lithotripsy three times (didn't do anything) and it's fair to say I'm a little bored of them now, the pain when they're on the move is absolutely brutal, although I have developed a few techniques for blocking it out as best as possible.

They've reviewed my diet, had a good check of my overall health etc but nothing is suspect (I generally only drink water, and lots of it), they seem to think I'm just prone to them. Has anyone been in the same situation and managed to slow the development of them (or stop them forming entirely)?

I'm 44 and only had them for 12 months. I now feel the pain coming on, so drink gallons of water for a few hours. It tends the fire the little buggers out with minimal pain then.
The first occurrence was particularly unpleasant, but I think i have it managed, for the moment at least!

I had a weekend with them in 2008. Lower left back pain, nausea then vomiting. Visited A & E and diagnosed. Passed a 6mm shard with a splurge of blood and no bother since. Thank goodness as it was hellish experience. I put it down to excess Rose aye wine.

My thread has arrived....

Upto the 23rd June I was cycling c75 miles a week.

On the 24th June I started getting kidney pain during the morning, by lunchtime I was vomiting and the pain was getting worse. My next door neighbour who is a practising nurse thought it was appendicitis, and ran me to A&E.

I was wheeled in, in a wheelchair as I was unable to walk. More vomiting, and I had a diagnosis of a water infection and was prescribed anti biotics and Co-codamol.

The pain never went away, constant 24/7, it affected my appetite and I didn't eat for 9 days. I lost 8 kg in this time.

After a week I revisited my GP who decided it was a kidney stone and arranged a CT scan.

The following week the pain disapated, and my appetite returned, fortunately as I was then away for a week after in Ibiza.

I had my CT scan on my return and the GP called me to inform me I had an 11mm stone lodged in my ureter (the tube that links the kidney to the bladder).

The consultant Urologist called me the following evening an stated it needed urgent treatment due to the risk to my kidney function. I was booked into his clinic the following Monday, where I was told I would need two operations to resolve the issue.

Two days later I went in to have a stent fitted under GA, and told not to lift anything heavy or do any exercise.

Six weeks later I returned to have the stone blasted with a laser and this time to have a temporary threaded stent fitted again under GA.

They access the kidney from the normal route out, there are some rather unpleasant side effects with the surgery, peeing rose wine is the least worst side effect!

Three days later the temporary stent was removed, a gentle pull on the thread by the nurse pulled a foot long length of tube from my gentlemen's sausage.

I go back next month, to get the results of the stone analysis and advise on any dietary changes needed.

Have a read of my reply in this thread here, fun!

I've had a couple and touch wood, never had any since. I haven't changed my diet, still probably don't drink enough and I haven't stayed away from the foods the urologist said for me to steer clear of. I was about your age I guess when I had them and they've never made a reappearance and hopefully will stay that way, VERY unpleasant!!

A flexible cystoscope isn't fun nor is 'self dilation' following a procedure to remove scar tissue caused by a sharp stone.

I'm just back from the hospital after having a CT scan for lower-left abdo pain. Diagnosed as a kidney stone.

Yesterday the pain was hellish, has subsided (a bit) today but still fairly uncomfortable. On cocodamol + ibuprofen, been told to drink lots and it should pass in a few days.

This thread and the other (linked) one has both helped + scared the s**t out of me!
