55 years old, never had a problems with the waterworks before, but today I went for a pee and got the usual strong gush, for about five seconds, then some pain inside and it stopped flowing. I was sure I needed to pee more, but nothing would happen.

I've been working hard outside in the sun all day, sweating like a pig, not drinking much, so I'm hoping it is just that. Also been drinking a lot too much beer and coffee recently too.

I've had about ten large glasses of water in the last 6 hours, had three 'short' pees, shut off abruptly, but don't feel the need to go at the moment.

Am I just dried out, or is there something more sinister going on?

I know I need to see a doc if it carries on, but I live in the Philippines, (hence the sweating) and I have reservations about the healthcare....

Not typical enlarged prostate symptoms. They come on over a period and involve poor flow, frequent need to pee due to incomplete voiding, and repeated need to pee even minutes after peeing. Yours is different from this by the sound of it. Strong flow is history with an enlarged prostate until after surgery: green laser resection or TURP (trans-urethral resection of the prostate). IANAD

Sounds to me like you might have a small kidney stone or tiny piece of gravel that needs passing.
I think it may hurt when you eventually pass it. Good luck.

Can be kidney stone or even an infection. One will pass (sorry) and the other may need drugs. Hospital most likely to intervene with a catheter if you cannot go and it's not a stone or partial stone.

I had symptoms you describe (plus peeing blood) and doc pretty certain it was a kidney stone as I had one seriously excruciating pee.

Also been drinking lots of beer and coffee over new year. I reckoned I hadn't had water to drink for over 2 weeks. Bizarre as it sounds the doc had me drinking lots of water and peeing into a sieve for a few days on the basis to try and catch the bits of stone as they pass so he could send it off for tests..... didn't get any bits.

Get to the doc anyway, but don't panic. I know exactly what you're thinking - I did too.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've been doing the usual 'worse case scenario', as we always do. I've drunk three more glasses of water, some cranberry, but still don't feel the need to pee. Wife says I must be very dehydrated, the amount I've been sweating, and the beer and coffee I have been sucking down recently.

I'll see what happens on the morrow, and report back. 9pm here local time.

Relief, just had a couple of perfectly normal pees. Bit of a wake up call, people have told me for years too much beer and coffee is not good, and I'm not getting any younger......

Wouldn't hurt to have a prostate examined just in case anyhow. I understand it can be quite pleasant if in the right frame of mind...

Trouble is that the doc uses a great big gob of lubricant and if you don't avail yourself of the paper towel proffered, when you walk out it will feel as if you've done a shart!

I'm 44 and was at the doc recently as I was peeing more at night had a clear PSA test adjusted my caffeine and chocolate intake and it seems back to normal now.

Wasn't a good time as it seemed to trigger an anxiety problem that I've still having some issues with got into my head that something was seriously wrong.

^^^this.

I knew I didn't have the big C, as I have regular blood tests for something else and it would show up there as a major red flag. I got rid of my symptoms by purely cutting down a bit on my coffee intake as it was getting a bit out of control. I'm 50 too so was a little concerned.

Hope that helps. smile

I tend to drink too much beer, then guzzle coffee all next day trying to clear my mead. Okay when you're 30, but not when you're 55......

I'm having a cup of ginger tea this morning instead of my usual first coffee.

I had the TURP procedure done about seven years ago. It sorted my waterworks problems out very nicely.

According to my mate, who has had kidney stones, that is something of an understatement.

I was trying not to scare him. The correct phrase should read " It will be like pi$$ing red hot needles"

I had two digital rectal examinations in a week. Lady doctor was quite nice about it all.

However, the biopsy is another thing altogether......yikes

I had one and the nurse reckoned it is the nearest a man can come to feeling the same pain as a woman giving birth........amazing relief once passed though.

Urethral stricture can also impede flow and make you go more often. Mine came on very suddenly and made peeing awkward.

I think I had either gas & air or an injection - can't remember - but it certainly helped. GP didn't deem it necessary for the bum poking....
