hehe The injection via rectum is something to behold. Fear factor of 48 million. Willy shrinks to 12mm.
Then they fire that bloody needle into you 12 times for gawd's sake. And miss the area where the anaesthetic is supposed to be. Willy now 4mm.......eek

4mm! Braggart! biggrin

I love the way the urology specialist nurse who tells you the result is clear doesn't actually say anything intelligible until you've been in the room for ten minutes. "Oh, sorry!" "I should have said earlier - you're okay!"

Ha! mine asked me if 'the sun was shining outside' while laid in the foetal position, the doc was wiping my bum and she was reloading the huge needle eek Think it was her way of trying to take my mind off it. Or she'd lost it after all my shouts in pain laugh

Wouldn't hurt to have a prostate examined just in case anyhow. I understand it can be quite pleasant if in the right frame of mind...
Trust me, it isn't....biggrin
I had two digital rectal examinations in a week. Lady doctor was quite nice about it all.

However, the biopsy is another thing altogether......yikes
I had a biopsy done a few weeks before the TURP, and I described it as slightly uncomfortable. It certainly wasn't painful, but maybe I was lucky. I don't think one needs to worry unduly about undergoing the process.

A chum of mine had three biopsies in a private facility and after two of them he was confined to hospital (NHS) with major infections! The two (prophylactic) antibiotics I had were massively strong - one alone would have sorted gonorrhoea. Bear in mind that the biopsy needle penetrates the rectal wall, carrying samples of faecal matter, and inoculates your prostate gland with all sorts of nasties.

Hopefully you get the all clear and you didn't enjoy it too much, did you? lick

The biopsy was not toooo bad really, but when the nice man fired the needle into an area that was not anaesthetised, it did actually bring a naughty word from me. Felt like I'd been given a kick up the jacksy really. It needs to be done though so all you readers out there worrying about it, relax.

Unfortunately mine was a big positive with a PSA of 38 and a Gleason score of 10 (Rampant Rabbit has nowt on me). Sounds like the Liverpool - Southampton score tonight.

Oh and the bl##dy thing has escaped from the prostate too. As Dick Dastardly might say, 'drat and double drat'. cursecurse

Fingers crossed it all goes well mate.

All seems ok had a clear PSA a couple of months ago but the urologist(I'm getting checked for varcocele) decided on a closer inspection as my GP didn't do one.

Well, time has passed and I'm still pissing like a good 'un. I think it was a lot of dehydration mixed with too much beer and coffee. Fingers crossed, because it was truly a horrible sensation at the time.biggrin

I suppose I should have seen it coming as my mother had breast cancer, her brother had prostate cancer and the old man died of prostate cancer in the 1990s.
Strangely, 3 years ago I was offered a health check by the doctor's surgery. You know the one where they tell you your cholesterol is in outer space, you're too heavy for your height and all that jazz. So I asked if they would do a prostate test. 'Oh no, we don't do that' says nurse, even after telling her my family history. rolleyes And to make sure we kept it a secret, she never mentioned it in the notes banghead
So here we are, 3 years on, with stage 3 and two consultants have said, 'you should have been here 3 years ago.' Ahhh the good old NHS. Anyway, bring on the radiotherapy and lets kick ass shoot

A classic example of motco's Law of Universal Incompetence which states that:

"It should be assumed that the individual with whom one is interacting is incompetent unless, and until, they prove otherwise. This Law applies to all from delivery drivers to consultant surgeons, from shopkeepers to lawyers."

Follow this Law and you will rarely be surprised. A good friend of mine's wife showed a big mole to her GP several times before he referred her to a dermatologist. By that time it was too late...

My Mum died of breast cancer too but at age sixty two which puts her outside the range of likely genetic involvement. My wife's family are a different story altogether - breast cancer (mainly) on all sides. frown It is a truly evil disease; but you know that already.

No worries mate, sounds like you have worse problems than worrying about hijacking. I had the 'finger up bum' check once, about ten years ago, but people in some circles say we guys over 50 should have it once a year. I can't bring myself to volunteer for it though.....

I finished radiotherapy just over a year ago, my PSA is now 0.01 - hope it goes as well for you too.

Hi N7

I was humbled by your posting.

I was wrapped up in my so called first world problems that frankly don't matter in the great scheme of things compared to what you are facing.

I am sorry you have a tough time coming and wish you all the best fighting off this vile disease.

Good luck in your endeavour.

Thanks both!!

My radiotherapy starts on the 15th Dec. Scheduled for 37 appointments but from Jan they are moving to a new treatment timetable of just 20. Don't know if mine will change or not.
Blood test this week shows PSA down to 4.9 so going in the right direction from 38.
Had my second hormone injection today too.

That is a very low score. Not a lady by any chance? hehe amazing! clap

I had a low PSA to start with (4.4) but my GP referred me 'as a precaution' (I was peeing frequently). A year and two biopsies later, cancer was confirmed and very agressive - extremely high Gleason score, but contained hence the hormones + radiotherapy.

As for being a 'lady', the hot flushes went on for quite a few months. As my GP (female) said, "Welcome to my world..."
