Out of interest, has anyone had any hernia issues?

Because of my lung condition, I cough a lot and was worried I'd done myself a mischief, but it seems to have just been a pulled muscle. However, my stoma nurse has suggested I should get a support belt.

Any experiences people want to share?
Yeap, few hernias here. I've had two operations to fix it, but it still keeps coming back. I'm quite a big boned guy, so I hide it well.

Really hard not to get hernia after the ops. I have round my stomach.

Firstly, apologies. There have been helpful responses since my last post and I’ve not checked back in again. I’ve always put this sort of stuff to the back of my mind and only dealt with it when I need to so close off quite quickly!

I’ve had a pre op assessment a couple of weeks back and met with stoma nurse today. I’m still wearing a practice bag to see how comfortable it is! I’m a bit hairy and it pulls so may need to consider shaving my new bum hole! biglaugh

Next Monday I have to attend the big talk - drs etc to confirm timings and what to go for - stoma/j pouch/temp stoma and decide later. I’m still not certain but think it’ll probably be stoma over j pouch.

Thanks again for inputs, it’s genuinely helpful to get views here rather than a C&C type forum where you only hear horror stories.

Pre surgery I made the mistake of googling j-pouch surgery and clicking images. Holy ####

Well we are all here whenever needed!

You will find that usually they shave the area in surgery but I'd give your whole stomach a shave pre op as it's not just bag it's dressing etc afterwards. You will find the regular changing of the bag then keeps hair at bay.

Well I’m in the club.. do I get a badge or anything? laugh
Operation happened on Thursday, partial colectomy for now before I decide on j pouch or permanent stoma. Likely to go with the stoma having read up between the two. Pain over the first couple of days was horrendous, but a fair amount of Morphine later and I’m back home. The stoma’s herniated already, but they’ll fix/mesh it once its permanent.
For now I’m just getting used to life with a bag, interested in hearing what bags others are using, I’ve been given a few options to try.

You will find things may change in the coming weeks as everything inside and out heals it creates the base for what bags etc you will need.

For me, I was mega skinny at the time and then as I put on weight I now need a convex bag, hopefully you get a good stoma nurse to help guide you to the best one, but many will limit their options to what they get 'offered' from the local supplier.

For me I personally love the coloplast sensursa bags, best emptying folding, nice pad that sticks well and I have 2 tabs on the edge of the bag that I use a slim Stretchy belt with (works better with convex)

Changing, all I do is take bag off (no adhesive remover but wouldn't recommend that post up untill it's healed!) wipe over with a skinsafe wipe, add a little paste to a dip I have in the skin and bosh the new one on. Takes 2 mins.

Mines a short illiostomy

I’m a couple of weeks in now, so some progress to report. As well as the hernia I’ve had some separation so still pretty sore around the stoma.
I was originally using the Coloplast Mio’s and got on with them very well - the emptying is by far the best of the ones I’ve tried.
I changed over to Salts Confidence BE which originally I found the emptying to be a bit dribbly, but now outputs a bit thicker seems to be okay. The wafer is a lot more comfortable than the Mio as it’s sectioned so sits better with the hernia.
I don’t have a belt yet, the stoma nurse needs me to decide what I’ll be wearing longer term first so they can order to suit.

If anyone’s on Instagram I have an account documenting everything - @southglostomates It’s not for the faint hearted though laugh

I’m in for my second op on Wednesday so thought it was time to check in. I’m going with the proctectomy, I decided a permanent bag was the better option for me than a j pouch. Ken butt here we come!

I’ve never seen this thread before- I’ve 2 stomas, have done for a year. Due for a jpouch reversal in a few months, and then the final op towards the end of the year. I’ll update here if anyone’s interested?
