If you are eating a restricted calorie diet I don't think that even with a insulin spike you will store fat!
We all know that water is better due to no additives but if you were drinking 1-2 litres of cola a day then if you are trying to lose weight then the diet drinks will be better rather than pumping many 100's of calories of suar into your blood stream.
The same goes for fruit juices which although "healthy" are crammed full of sugar! (Eat the actual fruit instead)

Soon as I hear someone saying "large frame". " big boned". "I don't eat a lot" etc I ask them if they have ever seen a fat Biafran!
I'm sure you get lots of confused looks if you ask that confused

As mentioned a few times in this thread already, get the myfitnesspal app and religiously log everything. You'll be surprised how little bits and pieces here and there throughout the week can push your calorie intake from ok to bad.

That's a 'maybe/possibly/could' - for an entirely different reason..

But actually there is no peer-reviewed published research that backs your statement up, is there?
I cba to find it. But the above links suggest that diet drinks do not do as they say...

What do they say they do?

All "diet" foods usually contain in the small print "will only aid weight loss as part of a calorie-controlled diet". If you're putting on weight already then switching to "diet" drinks won't help.

It all boils down to energy balance - if you take in more than you expend then you put on weight.

Yes and no. If you're drinking 10 cans of normal coke and switch to diet coke, you'll kill your calorie intake quite significantly. Don't ask "who drinks 10 cans of coke a day" - an ex colleague was drinking so much I swear he fizzed whenever he opened his mouth.

Not really because diet drinks will increase your appetite.

get you thin. In USA the public are demanding that the word DIET is removed from all labelling as its misleading and untrue.

I think it's entirely appropriate and it's the public's misunderstanding of the word diet that's the issue. hehe

It seems to me that when they switch to a diet drink they assume they've 'saving' the calories by not consuming the normal drink, so they can have an extra cake and burger to reward themselves.

Not necessarily - there are studies that show conflicting results - some say they do and some say they don't.

Probably because it affects some people and not others. We're not all identical clones and lead very different lifestyles.

Indeed. When I drink one can of diet coke, I just want another. And then I feel full/bloated from the bubbles. No, not Bubbles.

When I buy a litre of diet cola, I can easily drink the whole bottle. And I then pee a lot.

You are talking bks!
It's already called Coke light in many countries but nowhere on the packaging does it say "get you thin" only a moron would think that by drinking or eating something that says "diet" it will make you thin.
But if you were to substitute a drink full of sugar for one with no calories it will at least lessen the calories consumed if the same diet is maintained!

so what does the word diet mean to you? I'd guess most punters would think weight loss! Not stability of body mass! They are trying to sell it based on that fact.

Depends on the context really but on the side of a can to me it means "less calories " than non diet of the same thing!
Anyone who thinks that by drinking it they somehow get lighter is either kidding themselves or a moron!

bks! The average food indulger will think they are assisting their weight loss by partaking something that has the name DIET. Why would a big rich company use such a word. Only a moron would think otherwise.
Chubby Brown...the F plan diet tastes fking great with chips!

I've never associated Diet Coke with 'getting thin' or losing weight. I've simply seen it as a far less sugary alternative to the full fat variant, and therefore rather healthier simply in that respect.
