Lost 3.5 stone ... 8-9pm snacking rearing its ugly head :

Long and short :
I was circa 18 stone (18 months ago) got the finger out and I'm down to 14st 11 and I gym 3-4 a week (circuits & spin classes)...never felt better and have truly got the fitness / health bug.
My weakness is ravenous hunger about 8-9pm every night and my weight loss has halted probably because of this with snacking here / snacking there taking its toll.
I enjoy a certain chocolate protein shake which I find fills me up quite well, while its fat free are they not quite high on sugar content (??) .... I take these to fill me up not necessarily for muscle gain - is it completely wrong to do this ?
Any other suggestions to stave off my evening snacking ??
Struggling with this a bit just now so any help/advice/input/thoughts appreciated

Just a few tips I have used.
Eat wholegrain foods, they take time to breakdown and help to keep you full.
Try drinking more water, I find drinking a pint before eating usually helps.
Eat more fats. I find a few boiled eggs can keep hunger at bay for many hours.
Finally, I've found thinking about food always makes you hungry, try to keep yourself busy.

Anyime you feel like going into the kitchen for a snack have a glass of water instead, with a tiny bit of lime/blackcurrent/vimto etc, in it if you prefer.
Try it. It works.
Saying that, I find that a drink like Diet Coke does a good job of plugging a gap.Try it. It works.
Oh and Greek Yoghurt works well.

I know exactly what you mean. I've dropped from slightly north of 15 st to 12.5. Shaking off the extra .5 has been an utter mission. I now have my dinner later in the evening, and sometimes leave a little for later on if I need a top up ! For a snack, I do my best to keep the carbs down, so go for some cheese, ham or a pot of tuna with a decaf coffee. HTH, and congratulations with your efforts so far. My late night saviour...I play footy 9-10pm which is pretty late, but i'm hungry when I get in, so I keep a little of this in the fridge...

I've never understood the problem with snacking. Forcing yourself to eat your daily calorie intake in three sittings is surely not going to work for everyone? I know it doesn't work for me as I'd end up feeling ill after each meal and then hungry again a few hours later (like the OP), and I doubt it'd be very good for me either.
The most amount of proper healthy food I can stuff into me is about 400-500 calories (kcals) per sitting, and I need about 2000 calories to remain a steady weight, more if I exercise a lot in the day. The maths therefore just doesn't work. Ergo on a normal day I eat roughly every two hours from when I wake at 7am to when I go to bed at 10:30pm.

I started January 16 on a no alcohol month,; this plus reducing my carbs has resulted in my dropping from 14st 12lbs down to 13st 8lbs as of this morning. Last Saturday I decided to cut down further on the carbs (kinda Atkin's) to keep up the weight loss momentum. I keep fresh blueberries, 90% cocoa dark chocolate, along with walnuts and brazils handy for the nightly mini pangs. When feeling very peckish, I eat some of the above and drink lots of water. I am not suffering the desperate pangs of hunger that I felt on previous diets. I hadn't thought of masterbating because I work out most days, but heck I'll give it a try. Also would Capstan Full Strength work better that Silk Cut?
