I've looked at this a few times, I think I'd struggle as I'm a pork/bacon addict. My wife used to live off green salads and tuna, never really ate red meats etc. I'll have to look into it better, I'm off overseas soon so this may drive me to do it
I thought I was addicted to meat, but it was much easier to give up than I thought, and I genuinely don't miss it.

I do very occasionally crave a dirty KFX/Roosters meal when tired at work though ha ha!
I can walk past all the fast food outlets and never crave it, my weakness it bbq pork! My mates a Sikh, huge guy and veggie, keeps telling me to give it a go
Pigs are as/more intelligent than Dogs. I stopped eating Pork because of cruelty rather than health. Some of the videos on youtube are heartbreaking cry

I've worked with pigs in a school environment, little buggers used to escape on a weekly basis! I've seen the clips etc, I'm quite clinical to the whole harvesting of animals for food, I guess I'm a bit dead inside?

Not at all mate, I live with meat eaters, the vast majority of the people I love eat meat.

I've always leaned very heavily toward meat in my diet (and over weight heavy).
I've head regular business trips to India over the last 4 years and 'discovered' that some of the Vegetable curries taste absolutely fantastic smile
I'm still too heavy on the meat but my eyes have been opened.

ive been plant based for 1 1/2 years now after listening to rich roll ( www.richroll.com ) and especially his interview with colin cambell author of china study. his podcast https://www.richroll.com/podcast/neal-barnard/ a week ago is well worth a listen for first timers.

was vegan for 6 months but found it hard with work. need to try and get back to it - i find giving up dairy harder than meat.

i seriously think it will be big news soon - just look at front of sky news site today

i started blogging my food when i first did the new way of eating but havent updated for over a year but may be of interest:

http://wholefoodplantbased.co.uk/

am totally convinced a plant based whole food diet is the way to go

Noob ignorance query.

Let's say I went plant only every other day. Will I receive 50% of these benefits?

I tried a vegan diet during the first half of this year. Although I've gone back to [whisper it] eating meat, I'm now more particular about the type of meat - organic, etc. I've also not gone back to dairy milk, rather using coconut, almond or other nut based milks.

My sister is full vegan (or is that just vegan?) and runs a small company in NZ delivering vegan meal ingredients.

I'm not trying to ignite a debate here, just create a place for discussion, so if any negativity or comments about full amino acid profiles could be placed into another thread, that would be great smile

So do you want a discussion, or do you want a pat on the back?

Well done, you made a choice. Happy for you. Just try not to fall into the trap of letting it define you / banging on about it all the time. Vegans are cool, as long as it's not a religion. If you ever get close to calling someone a carnivore, punching yourself in the balls will stop a slippery slope =)

One bloke that might interest you is a cyclist who calls himself durianrider. He has fallen totally into the "head up his own arse" preaching side, but you have to give him credit for being an absolute machine - like 1200 miles a week on a pushbike machine. Pretty impressive stuff! His internet presence has loads and loads of vegan tips..
I am just starting on the road to vegetarianism and watching this made me choose a different lifestyle! google cowspiracy and this man gary yourofsky

I wonder what it is about stopping eating meat that results in people losing weight. A lot of people say they lose weight when they go veggie but is that because they not only stop eating meat but they suddenly do 5 hours of exercise a day plus probably get on the healthy eating thing and ditch the high calorie junk food?

You'll certainly benefit if you don't just drop 50% of your intake ie meat but replace it with something else.

try it and see! personally i had to go the whole hog (ahem) and ditch the lot - having a little would be too much temptation. no meat 1/2 the week would certainly do you good if it was replaced by good stuff

My diet is now roughly like that and I feel better for it. I appreciate it's only anecdotal but that's all I can offer.

Doubtful. You'd gain some benefit, but continually topping up with the 'bad stuff' will negate most of it.

Try watching Greger's video here: How Not To Die. The whole site is pretty informative.

I have been vegetarian (no fish, eggs only in cakes) since for 25 years now since I was 5.

It is interesting to me to read about those converting and claiming new found energy etc because I am tired and groggy most of the time and have no strength.
A friend of mine went vegan and was making these weird and wonderful smoothies each morning, and she said that she had so much energy since converting.
I myself have been vegetarian (well pescatarian as forced to eat fish by my dad, and i sort of stayed with it) since I was 3 and I too am a bit of a lay about. Not sure if diet or just lethargic.

Most converts to anything are more evangelical than those raised with it. One of Frankie Boyle's more family friendly jokes(*) was based on it.

If you feel lethargic all the time, it could well be your diet. I wouldn't pay much attention to a recent convert to anything. But Wheat Belly is an interesting read. Gary Taubes is good too. Read them. See what you think. Try changing your diet and see if you agree.

... and for balance, read The China Study by Colin Campbell PhD and something like The Starch Solution by Dr John McDougall MD* or Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease by Caldwell B. Esselstyn MD.

I've seen his stuff, mates with Freelee. He's a knob. biggrin

I've have veg days, and as I age, I will most likely move to less meat for a healthier life. Doubt I'll go vegan, I like cheese and eggs too much. There are some top athletes who are, they make it work for them.

edit
I'm also a recent convert to smoothies to get my dark green goodness, and all that SOD stuff.

I've been vegan 9 months now and feel fantastic. I believe we as humans have the capability to live 100% without animal products. We may not have had this freedom 100 or 200 years ago, but in the modern day in the western world there is no excuse to farm animals for their flesh or secretions. We have the choice, so to my mind it is wrong to choose to choose the animal cruelty option.

To anyone with concerns over energy / health / nutrition I would say have no fear! I've been smashing in endurance sport all year, i've cycled 12000km since Jan, always have energy, recovery time is the same if not better.

Some of the longer rides I did this year on a vegan diet, no meat, no milk, eggs, cheese, no gummy bears, no haribo. Swapped soreen for banana soreen (yes the banana soreen is the only vegan variety), nakd bars, bread, beans on toast, bananas, dates, health food, junk food, the lot (and there is alot of vegan junk food):

200km rides (x8)
300km rides (x2)
400km rides (x4)
600km rides (x1)
1000km rides (x1) this one took 72 bloody hours start to finish

Do it!

Phil.

Good work Bert. Completely agree with your reasoning and ethics.

There are several athletes promoting the benefits of a vegan diet and their improved performance as a result.

I agree, but there are plenty of others eating eating paleo/low carb/etc doing similar. Anything not junk can work short to medium term. I think however that plant based has proven to be the only long-term diet for health and longevity.
Happy with my choice. wink
