It's interesting, but it doesn't really point out much that isn't obvious. It's very easy to throw away a lot of hard work with a bit of gluttony. To make much of a difference takes a lot of exercise.

Also, as the experiences people mention here show, your mileage may vary. I also know people who have gradually lost significant weight with just a lifestyle change in activity, as well as people who are quite active yet still struggle.

When my wife and I lost a load of weight some years ago, we found exercise a very useful part of it. But we were doing a lot of it. She was cycling to work and back (which I did with her, I work from home so I was cycling to her work and back twice a day), she was walking in her lunch hour and running, swimming or at the gym almost every evening. And we were tracking everything we did and everything we ate.
I think a bit of gluttony is fine. It all goes to pot when you do it everyday, though.

Chinese buffet tonight!! Plan is to eat the restaurant into bankruptcy.

Has anyone read the article? It doesn't say 'don't exercise to lose weight' it seems to infer that exercise may have a less powerful impact on dieting than was previously thought. Oh and you'll have to exercise hard.

I still think that resistance training and diet is the best combination to lose the fat (and re-comping your body to boot), as your body is still burning the calories a long time after training

It's the usual case of the clickbait article title being a poor representation of the content of the article.

A lot of people have referenced being able to eat what they want - or friends being able to do so - if they exercise a lot.

I suspect that it if they kept an accurate food diary of everything they do eat, they'd find out that "what they want" is actually fairly healthy.

Walked out with a bowl of cola bottles. Not sure why they have cola bottles in a chinese buffet but they do. Ok, I lied. I have red jelly beans, too.

My sister wasn't impressed. While I poured the bowl into a large paper napkin, she told me off and said something like, "If you want cola bottles I can buy them for you another time!!"

I pretty much eat what i like, providing i cycle a lot ! An average 150 miles a week allows me to do that. Anything under that and i tend to put a bit on, 200 miles a week and i lose weight, no matter what i eat...... result ! :-)

The article has some validity, but blaming the obesity epidemic on overeating is over simplifying it.
The reason people are compelled to eat too much is the foods they are eating are nutritionally poor so their body tells them it still needs more nutrients. When whole, natural foods are consumed you are more likely to get the nutrients required so have no desire to eat more. Again, that's simplifying a complex subject but it's closer to the truth as we currently know it.
Eat whole foods for health (and weight control), exercise for 'fitness'.

It's pretty much common sense, god knows how industries have grown around it; 1 Mars bar = 60mins walk - pretty much everything you need to know can be extrapolated from that in respect to what's effective for weight loss.

Came across an interesting article about the weight loss this weekend, and while it does come down to eat less calories, loss weight, how many calories each of us need can vary hugely and if you lose weight, you need to be aware that this amount can be very low indeed.

^^ rofl "he tells contestants that they should exercise at least nine hours a week and monitor their diets to keep the weight off."
Absurd.

"“There is a lot of basic research we still need to do,” said Dr. Margaret Jackson, who is directing a project at Pfizer. Her group is testing a drug"
Oh Goodie. It's caused by a lack of drugs. rolleyes

So you didn't find anything about the 6 years of monitoring their metabolisms and results interesting and would rather just pick out a few sentences to mock.

Not really, nothing new. See the OP article and read something like Perfect Health Diet or Why We Get Fat.

The question that piece raises is - did the metabolic abnormalities they have now occur because they got fat and then lost a lot of weight, or are they what caused them to get enormous in the first place.
