Had a weird experience at the weekend...I had popped into Costa for a usual chat with friends.
Whilst there I had a large black Americano and then a medium of the same 30 mins later.

Approx 30 minutes after leaving I just started feeling weird and my heart rate seemed to have risen and stayed higher for a good few hours until I went to sleep.

Now I class myself as a fairly fit 45 year old and do plenty of Cardio stuff and cycle over 100 miles in sportives...My pal did say that they thought the Costa worker may have mistakenly put extra coffee shots in my cup.

Can extra caffeine in a short period of time cause problems?

Could have been. Many years ago (25!!) I made myself pretty ill by virtually living on coffee for several months while working on projects 7 days a week with little sleep.

Ended up with blood tests and all sorts followed by a month off work with no coffee.

If you don't regularly consume coffee, maybe. A regular drinker I wouldn't have thought 3 or 5 sts would do a lot.

On a related note, nicotine gum is an awesome pick me up /appetite suppressant if you've never smoked. (I use it maybe half a dozen times a year when I really need it)

Although I chewed a 4mg tab once instead of a 1mg. Holy cow I felt like death. Nicotine overdose is not fun!!!

There was a story in the tabloids a few years ago of a young girl who worked at one of the chains of coffee shops and drank 8 - 10 espressos during her shift. Got the shakes and had to be sent to the Doc's who told her she'd o/dosed on caffeine!

Without doubt, you had too much caffeine. Did you sleep OK?

Over the last 8 years I've become enormously fitter and healthier in all aspects of my life and simultaneously my tolerance to caffeine has nose-dived. I used to drink several coffees a day and would have a double espresso after dinner when eating out. These days if I drink a very strong coffee quickly I get jitters and everything, makes me go a bit nuts and coffee after lunch means I lay awake in bed at night.

After all, caffeine is a drug, it's a natural stimulant, so if you have lots of it it's going to get you off your tits.
My sleep pattern was very erratic strangely enough and kept waking but since then normality....scary really i'll stick to Tea

Depends on your definition of overdose.. Sounds fairly mild to me, you just had a bit more than you usually do.

You had less than 500mg. 1g and for most people its generally not that pleasant and obviously not advised.. 2G+ might feel rather st and be tempted to go hospital.. 10G and generally speaking, youre dead.

Yes caffine does increase heart rase, yes it can make you feel unwell.

HORRIFIC nausea. Like you were spun rapidly for an extended duration and then it stopped. Not sickness or queasiness but actual proper nausea.

Googled symptomatic relief and ended up spooning honey into my mush and a bunch of other stuff.

Passed relatively quickly though - half an hour or so.

Ha, meant the first bit about it being an appetite suppressant! Although I will take care with the dosage after reading that!

Love caffeine/coffee. Had a few today and then 2x200mg tabs before my race.

For medical reasons, I've been advised to keep to a 'low caffeine' diet.

To me this means two to three cups each morning, and maybe a cup in the evening (all "posh" instant, BTW). I also like Pepsi Max, and I'm OK with all that on a 'normal' day. After all, what do doctors know anyway?

But I try to go to as many gigs as I can, often in London. Depending on the venue, and curfew time, I sometimes miss the last 'sensible' (2330hrs) train home from Waterloo and will have to wait around until nearly 1am for the next Portsmouth Harbour service.

A couple of times I've bought a "bucket" of Americano from one of the chains (Costa?) on the concourse and have regretted it massively. It's ended up making me feel really rather ill a couple of times, sweats, elevated heart rate, restlessness, and stomach problems, etc. These days, I'll still order a coffee if there's a long wait for a train, but I make sure it's a smaller size and less 'strong' if possible.

Not sure I would call that an overdose smile.

I do recall in one of my abstinence periods having somewhere between 8-10 pints of full fat Coke (one of which may have been somewhat syrupy) and having a hangover worthy of at least as much beer. The effects really weren't too dissimilar, so complete waste of time hehe.
