Rory died peacefully during the night. Too special for this horrid world, as my wife said.
We are at Martin House Children's Hospice in Yorkshire. A wonderful place staffed by marvellous people.

I suspect there are many like me, who have read this story as it has gone on but not posted, thinking how awful it would be if it were our own children or family. What a sad end. My condolences. Utterly heart-breaking.

A final footnote. Very many thanks for your kind messages. It’s Rory’s funeral tomorrow. I returned from the local aerodrome to pick up a mourner who had flown in from Berlin, to find my wife in tears.
She’d had a phone call from home in Ireland to say that her brother had died.
The only conclusion I can draw is that God is a spiteful, vindictive, callous bd.
