As per title really how much do you drink and how much do you think is acceptable before "having a problem"?

It's not how much. Not at all.

It's about need and dependency. And that could be as simple as 'needing' that drink to relax.

Physical dependency, emotional dependency. They are different, but both are a potential slippery slope to misery.

1. It varies. I can go a couple of weeks without touching any alcohol if I don't go out (not really a home drinker)
2. I think a person has a drinking problem when they drink because they need it, rather than want it, on a daily basis.

I'm on eof those horrible Daily Mail binge drinkers.

Inter-spaced with some casual, at home alone top up sessions.

Recently nothing during the week, possibly 5 or 6 pints at the weekend after golf.

Be interested to know how much though, for example is 4 cans of beer a night excessive?

I don't drink wine, and I don't drink spirits, I do however love my beer. And cheese.

By NHS standards I probably have a massive problem as a binge drinker because I often have 3 pints of beer in a day. Sometimes 4. Four pints of beer being about twice the 'safe' allowance.

I also eat bacon rolls, the occaisional steak, I like my morning coffee and I don't read the Guardian.

I'm frankly surprised I'm alive to type this.

If they are standard cans that's about 3 pints. Do you really think 3 pints of beer is excessive?

Depends. Cleared a bottle of vodka during the Grand Prix coverage on Sunday, but hadn't had a drop for a week prior. Used to drink probably about half a bottle of whiskey a night a few years back but have calmed down a little since then.

Not likely, that's a starter!

Average for most days is a couple of pints on a lunchtime, maybe a half bottle of wine or couple of beers on an evening with dinner. Occasionally I'll have a small nightcap, a little whiskey, but a bottle of whiskey could easily last me a couple of months.
Weekends range from nothing at all to all out benders, although they are quite rare. Travel with work can also mean heavy nights, I had a few days split between Munich and Frankfurt a couple of weeks ago, 6 or 7 large beers a night was about average.

If it's every night then I'd say over 2.5 gallons of beer a week is a bit excessive, if it's occasionally then no.

Working in Holland at the moment and trying not get in the habit of drinking every night, as the beers I really like are 10-12% biggrin When not over here I probably average less than 3 pints a week.

I no longer drink. I don't think anyone would have said "I have a problem", because I wasn't losing my job, drinking cans of special brew on a park bench. But I was drinking far, far too much. Was drinking to numb my anxiety, without realising it was making it a hundred times worse. I thought those few hours a night of peace was the best I could hope for.

At my height a usual night (and by that I mean, pretty much every night) would be along the lines of:

- 1 or 2 Martinis (3 measures of gin), 1 bottle of wine, some Jack Daniels; or
- 2 bottles of red wine, sometimes 2 and a bit; or
- 4 beers (bottle), 1.5 bottles of red

I reckon I probably drank 150+ units a week. Was fat, miserable, and spending a small African countries GDP on wine.

Not at all.

About 6 years ago at a works Christmas party I nearly drank myself to death. Over a period of about 8 hours I consumed everything you can imagine; shots of vodka, Sambuca, whiskey, pints of lager and cider, red wine, white wine and a glass or two of champagne. Long story short; puking every half hour for four days, erratic heartbeat, unable to even get out of bed and just totally f*cked. In hindsight I should've had someone to take me to hospital because I genuinely felt like I was going to die.

Haven't really been able to stomach it since.
