Hurt my leg badly doing dumbbell squats last night, collapsed a few times after in sheer agony. Looks exactly like then same injury when I crashed my bike and landed heavily on my knee.

A&E?

I'm very much of the "oh it'll be fine, I won't bother the doctor" kind of thinking, however if my knee looked like that I think I may already be at A&E.

If you don't have a GP, or you wouldn't get an appointment for a few days - go to A & E. You run the risk of aggravating whatever it is, until then.

I'm on my way, it's just up the road. Could use some pain relief!

Always try to find a minor injuries unit first, unless it's really worth going to A&E.

Back from A&E, Doc reckoned I twisted ligaments or cartilage or maybe both which weakened the knee severely hence me collapsing twice and landing on the damaged knee. She reckoned that did a lot of damage, I weigh circa 100Kg and fell on a laminate floor.

Awaiting x-ray results now, got a pamphlet on soft tissue damage and that was me out.

The major and minor injuries units are in my A&E, the seating areas are right next to other.
Ah, I think I see what you're saying now, separate unit from A&E - shorter waiting times?

Sometimes, but really what you've done isn't an emergency.

Deleted that other post because I get what you're saying now, pain is playing havoc with me.

Please....if you are not in immanent danger of dropping dead do not go to A&E.

If when you get to the minor injuries clinic you need to go to the hospital they will book you into the Emergency Assessment Unit to see a doctor and be treated.

The MIU is in A&E.

I know because I worked at the hospital for a year on an IT contract and spent a fair bit of time in the reception at A&E and also walked through the ECC every day.

So, you seem to have a strong interest in this, do you work in A&E/NHS?

What do you suggest I should have done?

I actually knew the Doctor because I'd done some work for her.

Which bit of "Hurt my leg badly doing dumbbell squats last night, collapsed a few times after in sheer agony" doesn't qualify him for the A bit in A&E?

Just an update, no word from the hospital about the x-rays so I assume that means nothing needs surgery. Collapsed twice on my knee since I came back from the hospital, trying to walk very carefully now as the pain is something else when I fall. Stuck some ibuprofen gel on there to see if that would help.

Knee joint very swollen outwards but overall I think the leg is down in size. Very bruised now, even spread to my foot.

No replies from Bertrum yet I see.

Rang my GP last Monday and told him all the above and he said to come in, I was in no fit state to walk more than a few steps without fear of another collapse so asked for a home visit. He said no, they can't do it for sports injuries.

Today with my leg getting worse I went in to see him, I've sort of learned to walk with my leg hyper-extended.

He seemed very knowledgeable and after examination thought I'd torn one of my tendons. He rang A&E and asked for an urgent referral, saw the knee specialist this afternoon, had some scans done and they think it's a quad tendon tear but possibly the patella, there's a lot of fluid there. Once they open they'll know for sure.

Anyway operation tomorrow at 0800! eek

Amazed A & E didn't have you down for an op last week to be honest. Clearly it needs sorting though. Good luck with it!

fkin' ouch!

A non-medic but frequent patient's opinion: new, severe pain and extreme difficulty in walking, when you do not know for sure what is wrong and that it will a) not worsen if untreated and b) definitely heal fine on its own, is an entirely appropriate use of A&E - if you had, for example, damaged a nerve or blood vessel, which I'm sure are not always readily apparent to a lay person, you might have a very short window of time for effective treatment to get you back to normal, or an extended recovery period if you waited longer or something. Totally reasonable - it's not a case of the flu or a tummy ache in someone who doesn't want to cough up the £1.59 for their own pack of senna tablets…

I managed to do the same to my knee on deadlifts and then hiit treadmil. Absolutely knacked my right knee and now my left is giving me grief.
Got the doctor's appointment coming up on Tuesday make sure its nothing serious.
Riding my pedal bike though feels great and stiffness goes.
Walking up and down the stairs or any sort of incline...ouch.
Good luck with the op OP. Hope mines a more straight forward rest up thing.

I'm now in recovery after the operation.

Turns out I'd torn the quadriceps tendon.

The op was a success, still in loads of pain, they've stopped the liquid morphine. Good luck!

Ouch. Glad to hear you're on the mend. Pity about the liquid morphine - it's superb stuff. biggrin
