So I am impressively blind in both eyes, luckily the same prescription in both eyes (-8.5)

I wear contacts virtually all day long, glasses are awful for me, they give me eye ache (yes they are correct prescription) and I can't see properly out of them, everything looks curved, and if I have to look above/below or to the side I literally cannot see anything.

So laser beams... more specifically Optical Express. I have had consultation many many years ago, eyes not changed since, prices have come down which is good. As I have such a strong prescription I needed the best treatment (obviously - up selling I imagine!?!?)

Now my dad and little brother have had it done, they say best thing ever, but I can't get my head around the whole procedure and how horrific it is.

Anyone else done it? is it really worth it?

I am sat here, and due to hayfever I have had to take one contact out. My glasses are at home, so i am squinting at the screen at work. God knows what the others in the office think of me!!!!

There is a huge thread running in Health matters.

I've had it done and it's like a miracle.

You will see things you didn't even know existed. Get it done and enjoy the benefits.

I've had it done, the best money i have ever spent and i wish i hadn't spent as long deliberating on whether to get it done.

Five minutes, if that, in the chair then as soon as you are out your eyesight will be blurry but you already know you can see a lot clearer, sounds odd but it's hard to explain.

Do it. Things have moved on and you might be OK for it now.

I am considering it too. My prescription is weak. I used to wear contacts all the time but last year got acanthamoeba keratitis (swimming with them) which is most unpleasant and haven't fancied going back to contacts. Hate glasses though

OP, check your prescription in both eyes against what can be treated within the current parameters of the various solutions current available. Mrs Yex 450 had her eyes done a few years ago now and her prescription was c3.0 in both eyes and was inside the parameters that were able to be covered with straight laser surgery at that time. After a bit of research on prices and service we came up with a list of 5 options ranging from the high street (3 options) to private clinic (1 option in Chelsea) to the full Monty which was Moorfields Eye Hospital via a private consultation. Curiously once we had had a chat with Moorfields they were the middle price wise of the 5 options and so was a no brainer to go there and get the job done. Service was excellent and Mrs Yex 450 now has perfect eyesight and is a registered patient with one of their top-notch eye specialists for her rest of her life.

We were amazed that Moorfields was so competitive on price so it was a no brainer to got here thumbup

Shop around and you may be just as surprised as we were what your money buys with regards to the back up of a specialist hospital against a high street alternative.

This.
I went here: http://www.focusclinics.com/
They had a groupon deal at the time, the girl doing my initial assessment tipped me off about it.

Don't be afraid to shop around.

The first time you wake up in the morning, open your eyes and see things clearly without first reaching for your glasses will make it all worthwhile (depending on who you wake up next to, naturally)

The actual Op is over in a jiffy.
You just have to man up for a bit, the first few days of recovery was unpleasant, the next few uncomfortable.
But so worth it.

Here's the thread that was running at the time...: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I had it done 12 years ago at the Centre for Sight in East Grinstead. I was -4 R and -9 L, wanted to be able to apply for the police.

Police thing never worked out but I had my eyes tested last month and I'm -0.5 R and -1 L which the optician felt was perfectly acceptable given it's likely my eyes hadn't finished degrading when I had it done.

Can't compliment Centre for Sight enough, fantastic care taken of me and felt like they really knew what they were doing. This was when LASIK was first coming out, though the £5k bill was a little frightening

I had mine done 10+ years ago and love it. I'd also recommend shopping around - I ended up at the Royal Eye Hospital in Manchester who were brilliant and are the top of their game.

I also read about a procedure where they cut a very small incision in the lens of the eye and insert a contact lens behind your current lens. I would investigate that if I was having it done again. Sounds horrific but it is less of an op than the procedure where they fold a flap back and then laser.

Although I believe it's rare, as with most things - it's not risk free.

I have a friend who had it done a couple of years back. She woke up with severe pain in her eyes, and it's never gone away. She has to put prescription eye drops into her eyes regularly (seems to be about every 30 mins), and she still has to wear glasses.

If you asked her, I think having that done is probably the worst decision she's ever made. It's rare, but it can go wrong.

I had mine done in 2003, and I would recommend it to anyone.

One note of caution, since 2012 my eye sight has degraded from almost perfect to say 85-90% and to keep things 'sharp' I wear glasses for watching TV when I am more than 2 metres away. However, it is still fine for driving.

Also, since the op, my night vision when driving isn't the best, and glasses don't help. They did tell me this was a side effect, and as I rarely drive after 8pm, it isn't an issue.

Go for it!

God, this is what puts me off. I am sure 99% of the time its fine but that 1% especially with something so delicate like the eyes is worrying.

Me too. Also the night driving thing, given that my winter commute mostly begins and ends in darkness, both directions.

I would love to get this done.

But should I wait for my eyes to get really bad first?

I am "of that age" (44) and its age degradation. Currently -2 in each eye.

So should I wait?

Exactly the same here, including age and prescription

I cannot stand having to remember to take glasses everywhere in case I need to read something in a shop etc

Hopefully Mr 968 will see this thread & reply but he has advised on more than one occasion that laser treatment will not stop age-related deterioration of your eyesight & may well make future treatment such as lens replacement more difficult/less successful. You may be at an awkward age: too old to have laser treatment & get 20 good years before further deterioration & too young for lens replacement.

Well went for consultation at Optical Express in York. Very nice people. Went through everything. Highlighting the side effects. Potential issues etc.

The price they plucked out of the air for me was £5k. This is die to my very bad prescription. (-8.5) in both eyes. They said they'd have to use the better lasers to help night vision. Although stressed it'll never be perfect.

They also said the likelihood is I may need to go back within 3 months to have a second blast, as people with my prescription or worse is difficult to get Bob on first time. Always a worry!!!

I hinted I wasn't happy with price. Nothing was offered yet. He's ringing me back Monday. So I imagine I'll be offered a small discount.

If not I may as well train it down to London and go to Focus Clinics. They have 100% results. Seem a more professional outfit, and their top level (which I will require) is £5.6k. But it'll involve more traveling for me living up north.

May Google Moorfields as well actually.

I had mine done at Moorfields. It's universally recognised as the best in the world.

They offer private consultations and there breadth of knowledge is unequalled I'd say, well worth the journey.
