Even a 100% healthy person shouldn't stay in all day and every day, they too will get pissed off. Walking is a serious refresher and a good sleep pattern with a good diet is vital too, as we all keep stressing.

Rob and others,,,, you must fight the bad habits which come with depression. Thats hard but is key to beating it..

Is it heck, yes it's late but even if you were trying for a vaguely 'normal' bedtime of midnight or 1, that's 8/9 hours away.

Hours of daylight left yet, do you fancy getting out, do a lap or 3 of the house?

You don't want vitamin D deficiency or SAD (seasonal affective disorder, I think, it's when getting less sunshine messes with your mental health and stamina) on top of the depression you're tackling - you don't need to talk to anyone or get showered or anything if that's a bridge too far right now, just get out there a little bit, air on your face kinda thing.

It's easy to preach from behind a keyboard, but give up (or cut down on) booze.
Get out, do some exercise.
Think about joining nightschool, or some sort of class/club to meet real people, rather than sitting home alone.

Why are you sleeping all day?

They're right you know Rob, sitting at home isn't the answer. Fresh air is a wonderful 'tonic'; today I managed to walk almost five miles, not a huge distance but I haven't been able to do that in years and (blister apart) I feel invigorated - get yourself outside.

Rob, it seems like you're now in a cycle of sleeping in the day and then not sleeping at night.

Set an alarm on the opposite side of your bedroom (to force you out of bed) for two hours before the time you woke up the previous day. So 1pm tomorrow, 11am Sunday, 9am Monday.

Force yourself out of bed, in to the shower and out of the house for a short walk as soon as the alarm goes off, no snoozing!!

This way you will gradually and manageably adjust yourself back to a healthier sleeping pattern and you honestly will start to feel better.

The knock on effect should be that you're more tired earlier in the evening and find sleep easier to come by.

One other thing, as hard as it may be, remove ALL alcohol from the house and stop drinking all together for a few weeks at least.

People can offer you all the advice and support in the world, but there is only one person who can make it happen, and that won't be until you decide you want it to happen.

There is only so much support you can get, the rest has got to be down to you, don't let all this advice and help go to waste.

We are all on your side Rob, there's a lot of good people on PH....You'll be OK.

Have a good day tomorrow, and in future try to get out of the house as much as possible, even if it's just for a walk around the park, winter is drawing in, make the most of the daylight....

I'm up proper early tomorrow - made myself wake up early today in preparation - it's gonna be hard for you to sleep really early this evening I appreciate, but if you get your head down by 2 you should be fine to wake up say half 9 and get yourself reasonably sorted.

Think of it as giving yourself a fighting chance. It's not a bad habit but it is a bloody unhelpful cycle, and getting free of it isn't always easy or immediate.

Yep. It's a symptom, not the problem, but it can compound things if you aren't getting enough sunlight, aren't awake to make needed phone calls, get your whole system all out of whack. And unlike the actual brain chemistry bit, which won't be instant, you might be able to fix it relatively quickly, with luck.
